Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In addition to the nickname of 'Bambino', which was Babe Ruth's other nickname?

Answer: Sultan of Swat

The Babe is well documented throughout his career, for both his field play and his negative impressions of loose life left on children. Ruth hit more than 50 home runs in a season four times in his career. He died in 1948 at the age of 53.
2. Cy (Cyclone) Young was his nickname, but which was his born name?

Answer: Denton True Young

Young, who set the standard for pitching, was actually the third career pitcher to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, behind Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson. He retired with a record 511 career wins.
3. Which player had the nickname of 'Penguin'?

Answer: Ron Cey

The 12 year Dodger third baseman was short and had the running style of a Penguin. He helped take the Dodgers to nine postseason series, before finishing his 17 year career with the Cubs and Athletics in 1987.
4. Which 2004 Houston Astro pitcher had the nickname of 'Rocket'?

Answer: Roger Clemens

After 'retiring' in 2003 with the Yankees, Clemens signed a contract with the Astros. 2003 Yankee pitcher Andy Pettitte also joined the Rocket in an Astro uniform for 2004. Prior to Clemens' first retirement, he had won six Cy Young Awards and the Triple Crown twice.
5. Which pitcher who made his name with the Athletics, was nicknamed, 'Catfish'?

Answer: Jim Hunter

The others were not pitchers. Hunter spent 10 seasons with the Athletics, then his final five in the pinstripes. He won a Cy Young Award in 1974 before moving to the Yankees. Also in 1974, Catfish and other Oakland greats were at odds with owner Charles Finley over money, which led to a dynasty break-up after winning their third consecutive World Series.

He retired in 1979 with a 224-166 record, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1987.
6. Pitching great Nolan Ryan had the nickname of what?

Answer: Ryan Express

Ryan, throughout his 27 season career ending in 1993, won almost every major pitching award except for the Cy Young Award. He retired with 5714 strikeouts. Nolan was only the second player inducted into the Hall of Fame with 99% of the vote, the first being Tom Seaver. The Hall of Fame began in 1936.
7. Manager Miller Huggins took the Yankees to six World Series in eight years. Which was his nickname?

Answer: Mighty Mite

Babe Ruth had many nicknames for Huggins, but none could be printed. Ruth and Huggins, also nicked 'Hug', were at each others throats most of the time until Huggins left the team in mid-season 1929. He died later that September. Some say it was the strain of managing Ruth. 1964 saw Huggins' name on the Hall of Fame roster.
8. With the nickname, 'The Tall Tactician', born Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy, he was also known as who?

Answer: Connie Mack

Before managing the Philadelphia Athletics for 50 seasons, ending in 1950, Mack managed the Pittsburgh Pirates for three seasons. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937, 13 years before he retired.
9. Which of the following was known as, 'Charlie Hustle'?

Answer: Pete Rose

Known for his playing prowess and managerial ability, Rose always attacked situations head-on. He began his career signing as amateur free agent with the Reds in 1960, then after gambling accusations, left the game in 1989.
10. Which of the following had the nickname of 'Iron Horse' and 'Biscuit Pants'?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Also known as the Iron Horse, Gehrig did not like the nickname of Biscuit Pants given to him by the press in his early years. Mostly overshadowed by the other great Yankee Babe Ruth, Gehrig quietly put up his own numbers including 493 career home runs and a .340 career batting average.
