Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Every team in Major League Baseball retired this ground-breaking player's #42 jersey on April 15, 1997.

Answer: Jackie Robinson

Any player wearing #42 at the time was allowed to continue wearing it, under a so-called "grandfather rule". Some continued to wear it as a tribute to Jackie. In fact, nine players continued to wear #42 after April 1997, including Mariano Rivera of the Yankees and Mo Vaughn of the Red Sox.
2. In 1939, this New York Yankee slugger was the first player ever to have his number (#4) retired in the history of baseball.

Answer: Lou Gehrig

The New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians were the first teams to use uniform numbers in 1929. They used them so the players were more easily tracked on the field. By 1937, all teams were required to use uniform numbers.
3. The Yankees have retired the most numbers of any team including which number twice for Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey?

Answer: 8

The St. Louis Cardinals and Montreal Expos have both also retired the same number twice. The Cardinals retired #42 for both Jackie Robinson and their 2006 Hall of Fame inductee Bruce Sutter. The Expos retired #10 for Andre Dawson and Rusty Staub.
4. The Yankees have retired numerous numbers including most of the single digit jersey numbers. Only #2 and #6 remained unretired in 2008, although some think this Yankee wearing #2 will eventually have his number retired as well.

Answer: Derek Jeter

In 2008, no Yankee was wearing #6 and there hasn't been a superstar to wear that number in over a decade.
5. In addition to having his number retired by the Braves, this home run slugger also had his number retired by the Milwaukee Brewers, despite only playing two seasons for them.

Answer: Hank Aaron

Of course, Aaron did start his career in Milwaukee with the Milwaukee Braves before the team moved to Atlanta.
6. This former team retired the number 10 twice, once for Andre Dawson and once for Rusty Staub.

Answer: Montreal Expos

When the Expos became the Washington Nationals in 2004, the retired numbers did not go with them. However, Montreal's hockey team, the Canadiens, continued to honor the Expos by raising a banner in their arena listing the Expos' retired numbers.
7. In addition to the league-wide retirement of the #42, some people have pushed for a league-wide retirement of the #21 in honor of this late, great Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder.

Answer: Roberto Clemente

This effort was particularly notable prior to the 2006 MLB All-Star game, which was held in Pittsburgh. The effort resulted in the collection of over 70,000 signatures on the website RetireClemente21.com.
8. Some teams have not officially retired any numbers, whether because they are newer teams or because they choose to honor their stars in other ways. This team, honors their stars with a "Level of Excellence" by posting the names of past players, managers, and executives under the fifth deck of their stadium, the Rogers Centre.

Answer: Toronto Blue Jays

In addition to the Blue Jays, the Seattle Mariners, the Washington Nationals, the Colorado Rockies, and the Arizona Diamondbacks have not retired any numbers other than Jackie Robinson's #42.
9. Some teams have "unofficially" retired certain numbers. In these cases, there have been no official ceremonies, but such numbers are no longer worn by any member of the team. One such team to do this is the Red Sox, which have unofficially retired #14 for Jim Rice, #45 for Pedro Martinez and #21 for this pitcher.

Answer: Roger Clemens

Although Clemens' unofficial number retirement and election to the Hall of Fame might be in jeopardy given his issues with steroid investigations.
10. Because they predominantly played in the era prior to wearing numbers, this team honored its past greats Chuck Klein and Grover Cleveland Alexander with the letter "P" on its outfield walls.

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

Chuck Klein wore the number 3 for the Phillies only for his last two years there. He later played on several other teams wearing a different number each time. Most of these other numbers he wore were retired by the Phillies for other great players including Robin Roberts and Steve Carlton. So rather than pick an arbitrary number, the Phillies simply honored Chuck Klein with his name and the letter "P" (in old English Style) on the outfield wall of Veterans Stadium.
