Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The host nation, Brazil, had many dynamic gymnasts at the 2016 games. Which of these medal-winners did not represent Brazil at the Rio Olympics?

Answer: Denis Ablyazin

Team Brazil claimed three medals at the Rio games. Arthur Zanetti won silver in the rings, while Hypolito and Mariano achieved silver and bronze, respectively, in the floor exercise. Brazil was also represented in both men's and women's team finals.
2. This American gymnast was undoubtedly the star of gymnastics at the Rio games, winning four golds in her Olympic debut. What is her name?

Answer: Simone Biles

Interestingly, Biles was three months too young to compete in the London games four years previously. Although this was her first Olympic Games, she was already known as a force to be reckoned with, winning fourteen world titles (of which ten were gold) before Rio.

The American gymnast competed in five finals at the 2016 games, taking gold in all apart from the balance beam, in which she took bronze. Her medal tally from the world championships and Olympic Games (19 medals by September 2016) made her the most decorated American gymnast ever.
3. This outstanding gymnast won his second Olympic all around men's final at the Rio games, adding weight to the opinion of him as the greatest male gymnast of all time. What is his name?

Answer: Kohei Uchimura

Uchimura is described by many as the most technically brilliant gymnast of all time, and is a fantastic all-rounder, winning six world all around titles (as of September 2016) and gold at both London 2012 and Rio 2016. After sitting in second position for most of the contest, Uchimura's horizontal bar routine score launched him into pole position in the final stage, giving him an historic win.

Artistic gymnastics scores are a combination of difficulty and execution, and while Uchimura may not always have the highest starting scores for difficulty, he rarely has many deductions on his execution, making him a consistently solid performer.
4. The American women were a dominant force in the 2016 Olympic Games, winning half of all individual apparatus final medals available. Which gymnast captained this team, and took home medals of her own in the individual all-around and floor exercise?

Answer: Aly Raisman

Raisman also captained the gold medal-winning female US gymnastics team at the 2012 games, making her one of only two American gymnasts to win back-to-back team golds (the other being her team mate Gabby Douglas). Raisman is praised for both her power and grace, particularly in the floor exercise, in which she won gold at London and silver at Rio.
5. Eleftherios Petrounias claimed Greece's only gymnastics medal at Rio, winning gold in which event?

Answer: Rings

Petrounias came into the Rio Olympics as reigning world champion and a two-time European champion in rings. Although he qualified second, he stunned the competition in the finals with a massive execution score of 9.20.
6. Which of these gymnasts made his Olympic debut at the Rio games, and was renowned for the number of spins he could achieve whilst airborne?

Answer: Kenzo Shirai

Shirai was part of the men's squad that won Japan the gold medal in the team final that had eluded them for so long. He was described as a "human corkscrew" due to the number of spins he could achieve between launching himself into the air and landing on his feet.

In the vault final, he completed a 3.5 turn Yurchenko (this move had never before been performed in a competition and was therefore named after him), but Shirai reportedly achieved 4 spins during practice. As such, he was a favourite to medal in both the vault and floor finals, but he just missed out on a floor medal due to some poor landings.

The young gymnast did however take home bronze after a tense tie-break situation in the vault final.
7. The women's team final featured teams from eight nations, but which country, which has a strong gymnastic reputation, was notably absent from the contest?

Answer: Romania

Following in the footsteps of the great Nadia Comaneci, the Romanian women's team have been one of the strongest in recent history, winning a medal in every Olympic team final since 1976. However, in 2016 the team failed to qualify for the team event, leaving Catalina Ponor as the sole female Romanian representative.

The team final was dominated by the Americans, who achieved the highest score on each individual apparatus and scored almost ten points higher than the next best team.
8. A consistent performer in recent games, China fielded the joint highest number of gymnasts to the Rio Olympics in 2016, with 20. Which other nation also sent 20 gymnasts to these Olympic Games?

Answer: Russia

China and Russia both sent 20 gymnasts to the Rio Games, while Japan sent 19, the USA 18, and Germany 17. North Korea only sent 2 gymnasts, though one of these included Ri Se-gwang, who won gold in the men's vault final. Surprisingly, China failed to win a single gold medal at the Rio Olympics, compared to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where they secured 11 of the 18 gold medals that were up for grabs.
9. Which Russian gymnast managed to successfully defend both her gold medal in uneven bars and her a silver medal for the team all around final, which she had won four years previously, at the London 2012 games?

Answer: Aliya Mustafina

Mustafina has been a mainstay of the Russian gymnastic squad since 2010. As well as a gold a silver she also took bronze in the all around individual finals at Rio, and performed every piece in the woman's all around team final.
10. Which man won Great Britain's first ever Olympic gold medal in gymnastics, and then went on to win the country's second ever gold medal that same evening?

Answer: Max Whitlock

Going into the Olympics, Max was reigning world champion on the pommel horse, and had high hopes of converting this into a gold medal at the Rio games. However, the English gymnast surprised many to take gold in the men's floor event, which took place just a short while before the pommel final. With it, Max claimed the first ever gymnastics Olympic gold medal for team GB.

He then held his nerve to take gold in the pommel too, with his fellow Brit Louis Smith taking silver. Max finished the games with two golds around his neck, as well as a bronze from the men's all around individual final.
