London was originally to be the site of the 1944 Summer Olympics, but those games were canceled due to World War II. A total of 3,714 men and 390 women competed in 136 events in 1948. The top medal winner was Fanny Blankers-Koen of the Netherlands who captured four gold medals in track.
2. 1964

The 1964 Summer Olympics marked the debut of judo as an Olympic sport. Japanese Emperor Hirohito opened the Games. In total 93 nations were represented, comprising 4,473 men and 678 women. The 1964 Summer Olympics was the first to be held in an Asian country.

Only 12 nations participated due to the length and cost of overseas transportation. In all, 651 athletes competed in 94 events and only six competitors were women.

The 1912 Summer Olympics were opened by Sweden's King Gustav V. There were 28 nations represented by 2,359 men and 48 women. The most notable athlete in the 1912 Games was Jim Thorpe who won both the decathlon and pentathlon for the United States but was stripped of his medals after it was revealed that he had been paid for playing baseball prior to the Games.
They were reinstated in 1983, 30 years after his passing.
6. 1924

For the second time in the 20th century Paris hosted the Summer Olympic Games. Paavo Nurmi, a runner from Finland, was the standout athlete of the Games, capturing two individual gold medals and helping Finland to win three team medals. He was given the nickname "The Flying Finn" for his prowess on the track.
His individual medals were for the 1,500 and 5,000 meter runs, which he won on the same day!
7. 1972

The 1972 Summer Olympics were marred by tragedy as a group of Palestinian terrorists known as "Black September" broke into the apartment of the Israeli delegation and, after initially killing two of the athletes and holding the others hostage, ultimately killed them all. A decision was made to continue the Games, but that decision was highly unpopular among many athletes and fans.

In the end 92 nations were represented in the 1976 Summer Olympics. The standout athlete in the Games was Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci who won all around individual gold and received two perfect scores out of four. Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim also received a perfect score and won three gold medals. In track, Finland's Lasse Viren won gold in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs.

Several new events debuted in the 2008 Olympics, including a women's steeplechase competition and two fencing events that previously excluded women. The star of the 2008 Games was American Michael Phelps who captured eight gold medals in swimming, tying a record for most individual gold medals won. Belgium was a war-torn country in 1920 following World War I. Nonetheless 29 nations did participate in the 1920 Summer Games, which were opened by King Albert I. The US won 41 gold medals, 27 silver and 27 bronze to lead the medal standings. For the first time the United States fielded a women's swimming team consisting of six women. They won two gold medals.
