Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ellie Simmonds broke the world record in the 200m individual medley. Which sport did she compete in?

Answer: Swimming (Great Britain)

Ellie Simmonds competed in the S6 category, due to her short stature. In the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing she won two gold medals when she was just 13 years old. She continued to win gold medals in London 2012, and in Rio 2016 she was the first to complete the 200m individual medley in under 3 minutes.
2. Which water sport did Roman Polianskyi compete in?

Answer: Rowing (Ukraine)

Roman Polianskyi achieved gold in the men's single sculls, beating the defending Paralympic champion to the medal. Polianskyi began the sport three years before the Paralympics in 2013. He suffered from hereditary spastic paraplegia. He was placed in the AS class, which stands for arms and shoulders and is for athletes who have little or no leg function.
3. Michele George lost the feeling in her left foot in a horse riding accident. Which sport did she compete in at the 2016 Paralympics?

Answer: Dressage (Belgium)

From a young age, Michele George enjoyed riding horses. She tried racing, show jumping, and eventually dressage, which was when her accident happened. The horse she was riding was startled and bolted, causing George's knee to be severely broken. Doctors advised her not to ride again, but she didn't let that stop her! Within a year, she was entering and winning dressage competitions.

She won two gold medals in the 2012 Paralympics, and a gold and a silver in 2016.
4. David Brown and his guide Jerome Avery won gold medals. Which sport did they take part in?

Answer: Athletics (USA)

Brown and Avery ran in the men's 100m sprint. David Brown began to suffer from Kawasaki disease from 15 months old, which affected his eyesight. He competed in the T11 category for visual impairment. Visually impaired sprinters run with a guide who helps them to keep moving in a straight line. Avery matched Brown's strides and arm swings to help them to run synchronistically. Together, they sprinted in 10.99, which was just over a second more than Usain Bolt's 2009 world record time of 9.58.
5. Ernst van Dyk has won numerous titles in the Boston Marathon, as well as gold at the Rio Paralympics. Which sport did he compete in?

Answer: Cycling (South Africa)

Ernst van Dyk is a handcyclist and wheelchair racer. In the 2016 Paralympics, he took part in the men's road race. Van Dyk was born with both legs absent, and was placed in the H5 class for athletes with impairments occurring below their knees.
6. Zhou Jiamin won gold medals in both individual and team events for her sport. What was it?

Answer: Archery (China)

Zhou Jiamin competed in the women's individual compound open and the mixed team compound open for archery. 'Compound' refers to the type of bow used. Other categories included ones for recurve bows, and ones for competitors in a wheelchair. 2016 was Zhou Jiamin's first Paralympics, and she won gold in both of the events that she competed in.
7. Jayden Warn and Ben Fawcett were part of a team of 12 who won gold medals. Which sport did they participate in?

Answer: Wheelchair rugby (Australia)

The Australian wheelchair rugby team was known as the Steelers. Paralympic wheelchair rugby teams were mixed in Rio 2016: a single team could be made up of both male and female athletes. Though there are 12 members in a team, only 4 players can be on the court at one time. All athletes suffer from quadriplegia, but are assigned numbers (from 0.5 to 3.5) based on the severity of their disability.

The players on the court cannot exceed eight classification points.
8. In which sport did Liam Malone win two gold medals?

Answer: Athletics (New Zealand)

Liam Malone won gold in the men's 200m and 400m, and silver in the 100m. He was born with fibular hemimelia, which resulted in both of his legs being amputated below the knee. As a double amputee, Malone was in the T43 class. Athletes in that class competed standing using blades, and did not use a wheelchair. Malone broke Oscar Pistorius' previous Paralympic records in both the 200m and the 400m.
9. China dominated the medal table in this sport, but a few athletes from other nations made it to gold medal positions, too. Which sport did Beatrice Vio compete in?

Answer: Wheelchair fencing (Italy)

Beatrice Vio participated in wheelchair fencing in the women's individual Foil Cat. B. As a child, she contracted meningitis. As a result, both of her legs were amputated from the knee, as well as both of her arms from the forearms. Vio used a foil sword that was held using a special prosthetic limb.
10. Luan Goncalves was the goalkeeper in which team sport?

Answer: 5-a-side football (Brazil)

A 5-a-side football team consists of four outfield players and a goalkeeper. The outfield players must be classified as completely blind, and all wear blindfolds while playing. The goalkeeper, however, doesn't need to have a visual impairment and isn't blindfolded. Matches are played in silence because the ball makes a noise to orientate the players.
