1. Which country created World Cup history by qualifying for the first time?

Answer: Iceland

Iceland was the surprise winner of Group I with 22 points, ahead of Croatia on 20 points. Iceland created history by setting a new record for the smallest nation in terms of population (just under 350,000 in 2017) to qualify for the finals. The previous record was held by Trinidad & Tobago who had a population of around 1.3m when they qualified for the 2006 World Cup.
2. In the second-leg of the playoff qualifiers, which team came from behind to eliminate Ireland with a score of 5-1?

Answer: Denmark

In the first leg, Denmark only managed to draw 0-0 against Ireland in Copenhagen. In the second leg in Dublin, Ireland scored first in the sixth minute. Denmark's Christian Eriksen scored three goals to help his team beat Ireland 5-1.
3. Which two European powerhouses failed to qualify?

Answer: Italy, Netherlands

Italy finished second behind Spain in Group G with 23 points. In the playoff, they were edged by Sweden with an aggregate score of 1-0. This was the first time they had failed to qualify since 1958.

The Netherlands finished 3rd in UEFA Group A with 19 points, level with Sweden, and were edged out on goal difference. Sweden had +19 goals against the Netherlands' +9 goals.

Germany were very impressive in winning all their matches in Group C, finishing 11 points ahead of Northern Ireland. They scored 43 goals and conceded only four goals.

Belgium in Group H were the first team in Europe to qualify when they beat Greece away 2-1 on 3rd September 2017. They were undefeated with 9 wins, 1 draw and finished with 28 points, nine points ahead of second-placed Greece.

Answer: Third

Prior to the 2018 World Cup qualification tournament, Poland's best finish in a world cup was third place in 1974 and 1982. Poland finished five points ahead of Denmark with 25 points from eight wins, one draw and one loss. They scored 28 goals and conceded 14.
7. How many matches did Spain, the winners of UEFA Group G winner, lose?

Answer: 0

Spain were undefeated with nine wins and one draw to finish with 28 points, five points ahead of Italy. They scored 36 goals and conceded only three.
8. Which of these UEFA teams won their group without losing any matches?

Answer: England

England topped Group F with 26 points from eight wins and two draws, scoring 18 goals and conceding three. Serbia, Portugal and France all lost one match.

Answer: Serbia

Serbia won this group with 21 points, two ahead of Ireland. They had six wins, three draws and one loss; their only loss was in their away match against Austria (which finished 3-2).

Answer: Greece

Croatia beat Greece with a score of 4-1 at home, before drawing 0-0 away. That victory booked their fifth appearance at a World Cup tournament.
