This was the first ever victory by an Asian team over Germany in World Cup history. The last time Germany was eliminated in the first round was by Switzerland in 1938. They lost 2-4 in a replay after a 1-1 draw in the first game.

Defender Felipe Baloy (born 24 February 1981) at the age of 37, became the oldest Panama's player and the first Panamanian player in World Cup history to score a goal. Panama lost all 3 matches: 0-3 to Belgium, 1-6 to England and 1-2 to Tunisia. The goal scored against Tunisia was an own goal, so Baloy remained as the sole scorer in the three games.
