Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. May a player bounce the ball off the goal post then catch it again without it touching any other player?

Answer: Yes

A player may do this whilst attempting to score a goal in general play and at a throw-in situation. Although when in a throw-in situation, the player must step on to the court before any part of their body comes into contact with the ball.
2. Is a player allowed to roll the ball to another player during play?

Answer: No

A player may only roll the ball to another player when returning the ball for a penalty, free or centre pass, although they may roll the ball to themself to gain possession of the ball.
3. When is a goal not counted towards the score?

Answer: All these

The ball must completely pass through the goal ring before time is called for it to be counted as a scoring shot. The only exception to this is when a penalty has been awarded as time is called. In this case, any successful goal attempt is added to the score.
4. When is the only time a defending player may defend (the player with the ball) from less than 3 feet away?

Answer: When the player with the ball has stepped away from the position of their original grounded foot

As long as the defending player is at least 3 feet away from the original grounded foot of the player with the ball, they may defend the pass or shot. This includes when a player is shooting for goal.
5. If a player is leaning on the ball in an offside area (on court) but they are standing in an area they are allowed to be in, is this an offence?

Answer: No

The player may lean on the ball in an offside area as long as no part of their body touches the ground in that area. If the ball is out of court, a throw-in is awarded to the opposing team.
6. Which of these may a player do in the course of a game?

Answer: Hit the ball with an open hand

It is an offence to deliberately throw the ball at an umpire unless returning the ball to them at the end of a quarter, for a toss-up, or if they request the ball. There is no penalty for throwing the ball at another player (on the opposing team) unless the umpire deems it 'unsportsman-like' and a free pass will be awarded to the opposing team. Any 'hitting' of the ball must be done with an open hand otherwise a free pass will be awarded to the opposing team.
7. When a penalty is awarded, it shall be taken where the infringement occurred except when?

Answer: When it places the non-offending team at a disadvantage

If the infringement occurs in a place where it disadvantages the non-offending team, the umpire may use their discretion as to where to set the penalty. The infringing player must stand beside the player taking the penalty until that player has released the ball.
8. How is a penalty pass different from a free pass?

Answer: A penalty pass is for an infringement involving more than 1 player whereas a free pass involves only 1 player

A penalty pass is for an infringement involves more than 1 player (eg obstruction or contact) whereas a free pass involves only 1 player (eg stepping or replay). If a penalty pass is awarded, the offending player must stand to the side of the player taking the penalty whereas for a free pass, the player may 'run free' on the court and may even choose to defend the penalty pass being taken.
9. What does a player *not* have to do when taking a throw-in?

Answer: Wait for the umpire to call 'play'

Players used to have to wait for the umpire to call 'play' before throwing the ball into court from a throw-in, but not any more.
In the mid-late 1990s the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA) decided that this slowed the pace of the game too much and changed the ruling so that players no longer had to wait for the umpire to call 'play'.
Players must 'toe the line', ensure that all players are on court, throw the ball in from where the ball crossed the line on the way out of court, observe all other rules relating to offside and footwork and not step onto the court until the ball has been thrown.
10. If 2 players go 'offside' at the same time and neither one is in contact with the ball or interferes with play, what is the umpire's ruling?

Answer: The umpire will acknowledge the offside but do nothing

Unless either player is contact with the ball or interferes with play in that area, neither player is penalised although the umpire will generally acknowledge the offside by calling 'play on'.
If one or both players are in contact with the ball or interfere with play the umpire will toss the ball.
If two players from opposing thirds (ie centre third and a goal third) go offside at the same time and at least one is in contact with the ball, the umpire will toss the ball in the centre third between any two players allowed in that area.
