Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ken Boyer played in the Major Leagues from 1955 to 1968, belting 282 career home runs. For which team did Boyer smack 255 of his homers?

Answer: Cardinals

Ken Boyer was an excellent all-around third baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1955 to 1965. Boyer won five Gold Glove Awards and 11 All-Star Game selections. Perhaps Boyer's finest season with the Cardinals occurred in 1960 when he batted .304 with 32 HRs and 97 RBIs. Boyer hit a grand slam in the 1964 World Series, helping the Cardinals to a victory over the New York Yankees (and brother Clete Boyer). Boyer's uniform number was retired by St. Louis in 1984.
2. Which one of these third basemen won World Series rings for both the 1984 Tigers and the 1986 Mets?

Answer: Howard Johnson

This switch-hitting third baseman had productive years with the Mets from 1987 to 1991. In 1991, Johnson belted 38 HRs and had 117 RBIs. Overall, Johnson belted 228 HRs in a career which lasted from 1982 to 1995. Doug DeCinces played with the Angels from 1982 to 1987. Robin Ventura and Ken Caminiti had not yet entered big league baseball in 1986.
3. This slugging third baseman appeared in World Series games for three different teams in a career which lasted from 1987 to 2003. Can you identify him?

Answer: Matt Williams

Williams was fortunate enough to play for the Giants (1989), the Indians (1997), and the Diamondbacks (2001). Williams belted a homer and had seven RBIs to help Arizona win the 2001 World Series title. During his career, Williams smacked 378 home runs and won four Gold Glove awards for fielding excellence.
4. George Brett played his entire Hall of Fame career with the Kansas City Royals. Which uniform number did Brett wear?

Answer: 5

Brett played third base for the Kansas City Royals from 1973 to 1993. Brett wore uniform number 5 for the Royals, and this number symbolized passion and excellence for Kansas City. Brett belted 317 home runs, had 3154 base hits, and knocked in 1595 runs for the Royals. Brett proudly wore his number 5 uniform in 13 All-Star Games. Quite fittingly, Brett's number was retired by Kansas City in 1994.
5. Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson played his entire Major League career (1955-1977) with the Baltimore Orioles. Who was Robinson's first big league manager?

Answer: Paul Richards

Richards managed the Orioles from 1955 to 1961, compiling a record of 517-539. Robinson was one of the greatest third basemen in big league history, winning 16 Gold Glove awards, earning 18 All-Star Game selections, and hitting 268 home runs. Billy Hitchcock managed the Orioles from 1962 to 1963, Hank Bauer guided the Orioles from 1964 to 1968, and Earl Weaver took over the O's in 1969.
6. Ron Santo played most of his big league career (1960-1975) with the Chicago Cubs. However, he ended his career with which American League club?

Answer: White Sox

This popular third baseman belted 337 HRs and knocked in 1,290 runs while he was with the Cubbies from 1960 to 1973. In 1974, Santo spent the final year of his career as a DH and a second baseman with the Chicago White Sox. He retired following the 1974 season. Santo earned nine All-Star Game selections and five Gold Glove awards with the Cubs, and his number 10 uniform was retired by the Cubs in 2003.
7. Which one of these slugging third basemen never appeared in a World Series game?

Answer: Vinny Castilla

Castilla played for nine different clubs in a Major League career which lasted from 1991 to 2006. Castilla hit 320 home runs and knocked in 1105 runs during his time in the show. However, Castilla was never fortunate enough to play for a team which reached the World Series. Mike Schmidt appeared in the World Series for the Phillies (1980 and 1983), Gary Gaetti reached the Series with the Twins in 1987, and Ron Cey played for the Dodgers in four World Series (1974, 1977, 1978, and 1981).
8. Graig Nettles was an All-Star third baseman who played in the big leagues from 1967 to 1988. What was Nettles' nickname?

Answer: Puff

Nettles supposedly received the nickname "Puff" from his New York Yankees teammates because he would disappear in a "puff of smoke" after pulling off a practical joke in the clubhouse. The lefty-hitting Nettles enjoyed some outstanding seasons with the Yankees, slamming 250 of his 390 career home runs for the Bombers. "Puff" was also a brilliant fielder at third base, particularly during the 1978 World Series.
9. Which one of these ballplayers appeared on the cover of the very-first issue of "Sports Illustrated Magazine" 1954?

Answer: Eddie Mathews

This left-handed hitting third sacker belted 512 home runs and drove in 1473 runs in a career which lasted from 1952 to 1968. Mathews was the first person ever to appear on the cover of the magazine on August 16, 1954. The picture on the cover showed the number 41 slugger swinging at a pitch. Mathews was the only player ever to appear with the Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta Braves. Mathews was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978.
10. Which one of these big league third basemen batted left-handed?

Answer: Richie Hebner

Richie Hebner played for five different teams in a career which lasted from 1968 to 1985. Hebner's most productive seasons occurred when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hebner played third base for the 1971 World Series champion Pirates, batting .271 with 17 HRs and 67 RBIs during the regular season.
