Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Sooners hold the distinction of having played in the Sugar Bowl twice in the same calendar year, 1972. Who were their two opponents?

Answer: Auburn and Penn State

After the 1971 season, the game was played on January 1. However, following the 1972 season, the Sugar Bowl was scheduled for December 31. The Sooners won both outings and finished second both seasons in the Associated Press poll.
2. In an inter-regional classic against Ohio State in 1977, the Sooner placekicker led the Buckeye crowd in chanting, "Block that Kick!", then booted home a 41-yard field goal for a thrilling victory in Columbus. Name that kicker.

Answer: Uwe von Schamann

Von Schamann's kick with three seconds left capped a miraculous comeback for a 29-28 win on the Buckeyes' home turf. Mike Babb's recovery of an onside kick set the stage for Uwe's heroics after the Sooners had failed on a two-point conversion attempt to tie the game.
3. After compiling an 11-0 record during the 1974 regular season en route to a fourth national title, in which postseason bowl did the Sooners play?

Answer: None

The team was on probation in 1974 for a recruiting violation. As part of the probation they were not allowed to participate in a postseason bowl, nor were any of their games televised. However, they overcame those obstacles and finished a rugged schedule as the only undefeated team in the country.
4. At the start of the 2007 season, Oklahoma fans were optimistic but also nervous at the prospect of having an inexperienced quarterback for the third straight season. However, the redshirt freshman who took over the signal-calling duties not only led the team to a second straight conference championship, but he also led the nation in passing efficiency. Who was this?

Answer: Sam Bradford

Bradford, a Midwest City product, wasted no time in electrifying Sooner fans with his uncanny accuracy and intelligent decision-making on the field.
5. In three different seasons during the 20th century, Oklahoma had a pair of 1000+ yard rushers, once in the 1950s and twice in the 1970s. Which of the following pairs did not each rush for over 1000 yards in the same season?

Answer: Billy Sims and Kenny King

The year that Washington and Clark both broke the 1000-yard barrier, no other college team had ever had a pair of runners accomplish the feat together. In addition to that season, wishbone quarterback Steve Davis finished the season just 20 yards shy of the mark himself.
6. The Sooners boasted not only the Heisman Award winner, but also the Outland Award winner (outstanding lineman) in the same season, as they finished at 11-1 with another Orange Bowl victory. Who were the players who received those honors in the same year?

Answer: Billy Sims and Greg Roberts

In 1978, Sims ran for 1762 yards enroute to becoming Oklahoma's third Heisman Trophy recipient. Leading the way on many of those runs was Roberts, a senior left guard whose blocking provided ample running room for his teammate.
7. Which of the following players won the Heisman Trophy during his career at OU?

Answer: Steve Owens

Owens became the second Heisman winner from OU in 1969. Heupel and Pruitt each finished second in the voting their senior year, while Peterson was the runner-up as a true freshman.
8. When Bob Stoops became the Sooner head coach in 1999, the team's fortunes quickly began to rise again after several losing seasons. What is the name of the head coach that Stoops followed?

Answer: John Blake

Following the termination of Blake, Stoops was hired from the University of Florida staff. In his second year at the Sooner helm, he guided the squad to an undefeated season and the seventh national championship in school history.
Schnellenberger was OU coach for one season prior to Blake. Fairbanks and Switzer coached many fine Sooner teams from the late 1960s through the 1980s.
9. Five brothers; Buddy, Kurt, Lyle, Bob, and Lynn Burris, all played football for the University of Oklahoma. From what high school and/or community did this family come from?

Answer: Muskogee

Buddy Burris, the first of the five to play for the Sooners, became the first three-time football All-American in school history. He passed away in late 2007.
10. What is the length of Barry Switzer's longest game winning streak as coach of the Sooners?

Answer: 28

From October 1973 until November 1975, Switzer's squads posted wins in every outing. A mistake-filled loss at home to Kansas ended the streak, but the Sooners still rebounded to win their second consecutive national title. Switzer actually went his first 35 games without a loss, since his first two games as head coach in 1973 were a win over Baylor, followed by a 7-7 tie on the road against defending National Champion Southern Cal.
