Mark Tewksbury was born in Calgary in 1968. Swimming backstroke, he won his first major medals at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, triumphing in the 100 m backstroke and 4 x 100 m medley. Four years later in Auckland, he successfully defended both titles. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, he won his only Olympic gold in the 100 m backstroke.

The Edmonton Oilers began play in the World Hockey Association in 1972. When that league folded in 1979, they were admitted into the National Hockey League. With a certain Wayne Gretzky on board, they became the dominant franchise in the league in the late 80s.

Their first Stanley Cup arrived in 1984 when they ended the Islanders' bid for a fifth straight title in the finals. The Flyers were vanquished the following year as well as in 1987, whilst the Bruins were their finals victims in both 1988 and 1990.

Erin McLeod was born in St Albert in 1983 and is a soccer goalkeeper. She played collegiate soccer at both SMU and Penn State before signing for her first pro team, the Vancouver Whitecaps, in 2004. She helped the Whitecaps to their first W-League crown in her debut season. She made her full international debut for Canada in 2002 whilst still at college.

The rather unimaginative moniker of Commonwealth Stadium was chosen for the venue. The capacity for the games was 42,500, but this has since risen to over 55,000. The Edmonton Eskimos CFL team moved out of their old Clarke Stadium into the new arena after the games were finished. Canada topped the medal table in 1978 with 109 medals, including 45 golds.

The Calgary Stampeders, who play home games at McMahon Stadium, won their first Grey Cup in 1948 and their second in 1971. There then followed a long drought until the signing of former Boston College and New England Patriots quarterback Flutie in 1992.

In his first season in Calgary, he led the Stampeders to a 13-5 regular season record. Victory over arch-rivals Edmonton Eskimos in the Western Division Finals gave them a berth in the Grey Cup title game, where Winnipeg Blue Bombers were defeated 24-10. Flutie passed for 480 yards and two touchdowns on his way to the MVP award.

Kurt Browning was born in Rocky Mountain House in 1966, and raised in nearby Caroline. He was figure skating World Champion four times between 1989 and 1993. At those same games, he was given the honour of carrying the Canadian flag at the opening ceremony.

The Atlanta Flames began playing in 1972, with the nickname coming from the burning of the city during the Civil War. Poor attendances and subsequent loss of revenue led to the team being sold and relocating in 1980 to Calgary. The team were much more successful in Alberta, both on and off the ice.

They reached their first Stanley Cup finals in 1989, losing to the Montreal Canadiens. In 1989, they were back in the finals against the same opponents, and this time they prevailed by four games to two to lift the famous trophy.
