Answer: Philadelphia Flyers

The Canucks were a 1970 NHL expansion team, and played home games at the Pacific Coliseum before moving into General Motors Place (later renamed Rogers Arena) in 1995. The Canucks reached their first Stanley Cup finals in 1982 but were swept 4-0 by a New York Islanders team who completed a hattrick of titles.

Their next finals appearance came in 1994, against the other New York team, the Rangers. This one was much closer, with the team from the Big Apple winning in seven games. There was another game seven heartbreaker for the Canucks in 2011, this time at the hands of the Boston Bruins.
2. Justin Morneau, from New Westminster, was a baseball Hall of Fame first baseman. In 2006, he won the American League MVP award whilst playing for which team?

Answer: Minnesota Twins

Justin Morneau was born in New Westminster in 1981 and played both ice hockey and baseball growing up before choosing the latter as a full-time career. The Minnesota Twins selected him in the 1999 MLB draft, making his big league debut in 2003. In 2006, he hit 34 home runs and 130 RBIs on the way to becoming the first Canadian to win the AL MVP award.

Victoria, on Vancouver Island, is the provincial capital of British Columbia. The 1994 Commonwealth Games took place there between the 18th and 28th of August. Most events took place at Centennial Stadium or Victoria Memorial Arena. The host nation had a fairly successful games, finishing second in the medal table, albeit a long way behind leaders Australia.

The BC Lions began play in the CFL in 1954, playing home games at Empire Stadium until moving into BC Place Stadium in 1983. The team's early years were a bit of a struggle, but they finally reached their first Grey Cup final in 1963, losing to Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Twelve months later, they got their revenge on Hamilton with a 34-24 victory in the final.

In 2011, they defeated Winnipeg Blue Bombers to win the franchise's sixth Grey Cup title.

The Prince George Cougars and Kelowna Rockets are members of the Western Hockey League, part of the Canadian Hockey League umbrella organization. The league includes members from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, along with some teams from Oregon and Washington in the USA. Other BC-based teams: Kamloops Blazers, Vancouver Giants and Victoria Royals.

Cliff Thorburn was born in Victoria in 1948, and was a professional snooker player whose slow style of play led to him being nicknamed "The Grinder". He reached his first World Championship final in 1977, losing to John Spencer. In 1980, he defeated Alex Higgins in the final to become the first non-UK champion since 1952.

He reached one more final, losing to Steve Davis in 1983. That same year, he created history by becoming the first player to compile a maximum 147 break at the World Championships.

The Vancouver Whitecaps are a soccer team who began playing in Major League Soccer in 2011. Playing home games at BC Place, the team reached two Western Conference semi-final berths, in 2015 and 2017. The Vancouver Grizzlies joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1995. along with fellow Canadians the Toronto Raptors. Based at General Motors Place, their six year stay in Vancouver was not a successful one, failing to reach the play-offs even once. Falling attendances led to the team losing money, and, in 2001, the team was sold, and moved to Memphis.
10. The 2010 Winter Olympics were awarded to Vancouver. Whilst the city and its suburbs hosted most of the events, which resort town hosted the alpine skiing races?

Answer: Whistler

The 2010 Winter Olympics were the second time Canada had hosted these events, following on from Calgary in 1988. These would be Canada's most successful games up to that point, becoming the first host nation to top the medal table since Norway in 1952. BC Place Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, with skating taking place at the Richmond Coliseum.

The alpine skiing events took place at Whistler, just under 80 miles north of Vancouver.
