Question 1 of 15
1. The first match of the World Cup was played on 12th June 2014, and saw hosts Brazil face Croatia. The match finished 3-1 in favor of the Brazilians. Which player, signed by Chelsea in 2012, scored Brazil's third goal after 90+1 minutes? Hint

Question 2 of 15
2. On June 14, 2014, Colombia earned its first three points of the competition, with a 3-0 victory. Colombians had shaken goalkeeper Karnezis' net early in the match, with a goal by Pablo Armero in the 5th minute. Teofilo Gutierrez scored the second in the 58th, and finally, James Rodriguez confirmed the win with a goal at 90+3. Which country, known as Hellas, lost this match? Hint

Question 3 of 15
3. On June 15, 2014, Ecuador played its first 2014 World Cup match. Even though Enner Valencia gained the lead for his country in the 22nd minute with a great header, Mehmedi equalised in the 48th and it all seemed like the game would end in a draw. Michael Arroyo almost scored in the very last minute, but the opposition took the ball away and Seferovic scored at 90+3 and earned the three points for his team. Which national team faced Ecuador on that day? Hint

Question 4 of 15
4. On June 21, 2014, the Mineirao Stadium at Belo Horizonte witnessed a game with very few emotions, something that was expected from a country like Iran, but certainly not Argentina. The "Albiceleste" played one of its worst games I've watched them play in years, and it all looked as the match would end 0-0, but at 90+1, which star, also the star of FC Barcelona, scored the winning goal for Argentina? Hint

Question 5 of 15
5. The USA faced Portugal on June 22, 2014, in the Arena Amazonia stadium. Portugal started the match's goal count early with a goal by Nani in the 5th minute. The U.S. would not wake up until the 64th minute, with a goal scored by Jermaine Jones. And then, Clint Dempsey gave hope to the Americans by scoring a goal in the 81st, seemingly sealing the victory for the U.S. Nevertheless, a header by Varela after 90+5 saved Portugal a single point, and took 2 pts from the USA. What is the first name of Varela? (Hint: it's similar to that of a cartoon cat) Hint

Question 6 of 15
6. June 23, 2014 saw Netherlands vs. Chile as a mere formality, we could say, since both teams were already qualified to the next stage. The match was somewhat interesting, but there were no big surprises. In the 77th minute, a goal finally was scored by the Dutch (by young player Leroy Fer), and at 90+2, another young player scored the definitive goal to make it 2-0. Which player, who debuted with PSV Eindhoven in 2011 (and also scored the defining goal in the 2014 World Cup against Australia), scored the second goal of the match? Hint

Question 7 of 15
7. It would be acceptable to say Greece had a stroke of luck on June 24, 2014 when they snatched the victory (and a spot in the round of 16), from Ivory Coast minutes from the end of the match. Samaris scored Greece's first goal with a pass from Samaras in the 42nd minute. Ivory Coast equalised in the 74th, which meant they and not Greece would qualify. In the very last minute of the match, referee Carlos Vera awarded a penalty and the goal was scored, giving Greece the round of 16 match. Who scored the penalty, Samaras or Samaris?

Answer: (One Word, be careful with spelling!)
Question 8 of 15
8. On June 29, 2014, one of the most painful matches I've ever personally witnessed took place in Fortaleza. Mexico, a team that has become obsessed with qualifying to the quarter-finals (which it has not done in decades), faced the Netherlands. Everything pointed to Dutch victory, but the Mexican team fought to hold on to a 1-0 lead, the problem was that the fight didn't last until the end of the match. In the 88th minute, Sneijder scored the equaliser for the Netherlands and, at 90+4, Klaas Jan Huntelaar sealed a dramatic victory. How was this last goal scored? Hint

Question 9 of 15
9. June 29, 2014 saw a dramatic match between Costa Rica and Greece. It wasn't so much because of the goals, as the match ended 1-1, but because of those plays that could have been goals but weren't. Bryan Ruiz put the advantage on the "Ticos" side of the ledger in the 52nd minute and then, at 90+1, Sokratis Papastathopoulos scored a goal that forced extra time (and eventually penalties). However, Papastathopoulos didn't really steal the show, but the Costa Rican goalkeeper, who made incredible saves during the match and stopped a penalty, did. Who was their goalkeeper in this match? Hint

Question 10 of 15
10. Even though France vs Nigeria sounded like a one-sided match under normal circumstances, the French struggled with the African team, which actually gave a great competition. The game was pretty much boring, and we barely saw emotions until the 79th minute, when young French player Paul Pogba scored the first goal and, to make matters worse, Nigerian player Yobo scored an own goal at 90+2, confirming France's victory. What's the first name of this unlucky player? Hint

Question 11 of 15
11. Germany, who went on to become World Champions, had a hard time with an opponent that could be considered as easy, given the differences in soccer level and history between the two nations. In the round of 16, the match ended 0-0 and extra time had to be played. At 92 minute mark, Schurrle scored a goal for Germany and, at in the 120th, Ozil assured Germany advancing to the next stage. During injury time at the end of extra time, Abdelmoumene Djabou tried to give a bit of hope to his team, but it was too late. Which nation lost against the Germans in this match? Hint

Question 12 of 15
12. Argentina played Switzerland on July 1, 2014 for a ticket to the quarter-finals. Argentina kept playing in a quite boring style, making little effort to get the ball in the net for 90 minutes, and highlighting the Swiss goalkeeper Benaglio. Which player scored Argentina's goal in the 118th minute, winning the match? Hint

Question 13 of 15
13. Belgium played the USA in the last round of 16 match. Tim Howard was chosen as Man of the Match as he saved more than 20 goal occasions from Belgium, driving social networks crazy. How many goals were scored in extra time? Hint

Question 14 of 15
14. After a humiliating 7-1 defeat at the hands of Germany, hosts Brazil surely didn't want to play the third place match against the Netherlands! They did, however, and again lost, disappointing its people even more. The first goal of the match was scored early, in a doubtful penalty scored by Van Persie in the 3rd minute. Fourteen minutes later, Blind scored the second and at 90+1, a rather young player scored his first goal in a World Cup. Which player was this? Hint

Question 15 of 15
15. The legendary Maracana Stadium witnessed the last match of the 2014 World Cup on 13th July 2014. Germany faced Argentina in a match that turned out to be less than what was expected. The match was dragged into extra time with a 0-0 score at fulltime, and at the 113 min. mark, this German player stole the show and gave his country the trophy. Which player scored the stunning goal that gave Germany the championship? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first match of the World Cup was played on 12th June 2014, and saw hosts Brazil face Croatia. The match finished 3-1 in favor of the Brazilians. Which player, signed by Chelsea in 2012, scored Brazil's third goal after 90+1 minutes?

Answer: Oscar

The opening match was not as exciting as the result would suggest. The first goal landed early, in the 11th minute, when Marcelo accidentally scored an own goal. Brazil would quickly recover with a goal by Neymar in the 29th minute. In the 71st a controversial play in which Fred fell to the ground with little or no contact from the Croatian defender was sanctioned a penalty by referee Yuichi Nishimura (who did not referee any other game after that one), and Neymar scored it. Just when the game was about to end, Brazilian young star Oscar scored the third goal after 90+1, sealing the victory for Brazil.

Oscar debuted in Brazilian club Sao Paulo in 2008, when he was only 17. After a brief stint in said club, he played in Internacional, also in Brazil, and then left to England to play with Chelsea in 2012.

Answer: Greece

Colombia vs. Greece was the first match of Group C. Colombia showed it was prepared for big results with the 3-0 win over the Greeks. The man of the match was James Rodriguez, who would eventually become the Golden Boot winner for being the top scorer of the tournament.

Answer: Switzerland

Switzerland vs. Ecuador wasn't a very attractive match in my opinion, as there were few goal-scoring opportunities generated by both teams. The stadium looked empty in comparison to other World Cup matches that had been played so far, although FIFA President Joseph Blatter was there to support Switzerland, his birth country.

Michael Arroyo had a clear goal-scoring opportunity at 90+2 but Behrami made a clean sliding tackle and took the ball away. Arroyo was criticized in his country as he didn't try to get the ball back after losing it, and the play ended in Switzerland's last-minute winning goal. Sadly, some Ecuadorian fans even started making death threats against Arroyo, who decided to close his Twitter account after this.

Answer: Lionel Messi

This was supposed to be Messi's World Cup, since he already had experience from the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. Unfortunately for him, he was going through a stage of ups and downs with his team, FC Barcelona in Spain, and was showing a really poor level compared to what was expected of him. Messi was the force that drove Argentina through the round of 16, he managed to carry the entire team on his shoulders, because if a team like Argentina wins a match against a team like Iran in injury time, something's wrong with that squad. Messi was, of course, chosen as the Budweiser Man of the Match.
(Hint: it's similar to that of a cartoon cat)

Answer: Silvestre

Silvestre Varela, commonly referred to by his last name, entered the match in the 69th minute, substituting Meireles. I'm not sure if overconfidence struck the United States or if the defense wasn't completely concentrated, but Portugal managed to tie the match seconds before the end, which eventually would not be that useful as Portugal was eliminated in the group stage.

Portugal's star, Cristiano Ronaldo, only scored one goal in the competition, in the match against Ghana.

Answer: Memphis Depay

Memphis Depay entered as a substitute in the Australia vs. Netherlands match, and made a great performance, making the pass that ended in the second goal, and scoring the third and decisive goal for the Netherlands. This goal made him the youngest Dutch goal-scorer of the tournament. Five days after that, Depay also entered as a substitute, and also scored, this time in injury time.

The player changed his shirt name to only spell "Memphis" since he claimed his father wasn't involved in his life.

Answer: Samaras

The Greeks reached the round of 16 for the first time in their history, first with the goal by Andreas Samaris, and then by the penalty kick scored at 90'+3 by Georgios Samaras, who also assisted Samaris in the first goal. Greece would be eliminated in the round of 16 by Costa Rica, but the dramatic ending of the match will stay in the memory of both Greece and Ivory Coast.

Answer: Penalty kick

The match was in Mexico's control for the first 75 minutes (Mexico was leading 1-0 with a goal by Giovani Dos Santos in the 48th minute). At the 75 minute mark, the match was interrupted to have a cooling break, and coach Van Gaal completely changed his tactics. Mexico lost concentration in the 88th minute and Wesley Sneijder fired a potent shot into Ochoa's net after a corner kick, and the game was tied. Even more drama was added when, at 90 minute mark, Arjen Robben controversially fell inside the box, as it looked as if he had dived, but the replay was never completely clear. Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca gave the penalty kick and Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored at 90+4, sealing the Mexican's incredibly sad defeat and exit from the tournament.

Answer: Keylor Navas

Keylor Navas was one of the best goalkeepers of the tournament, if not the best. In this match, he made some rather amazing saves, and saved a penalty kick from Gekas that guaranteed Costa Rica an historical quarter-final match against the Netherlands. Navas was Costa Rica's secret weapon for this match, it appeared, and the quarter-final match vs. The Netherlands was also decided in penalty shootouts, which was convenient to Costa Rica. Coach Louis Van Gaal played an incredible, never-seen-before psychological move when he substituted his starting goalkeeper, Jasper Cilessen, with Tim Krul, who became a hero stopping Costa Rica's penalties, overshadowing Navas. Navas, however, was signed by Real Madrid after the World Cup.

As the last name of Greek goal-scorer, Sokratis Papastathopoulos didn't fit on the shirt, his shirt reads "Sokratis", his first name. His goal against Costa Rica was his first international goal.

Answer: Joseph

Joseph Yobo played his third World Cup in 2014, after being in the 2002 and 2010 editions. Yobo reached 100 international caps with this match; what an unfortunate way to celebrate! France was eliminated by Germany in the next stage with a score of 1-0, in a pretty dull match.

Answer: Algeria

The Algerian team was a surprise during the tournament, first because they got through the group stage, and then because they took Germany to extra time. Goalkeeper Rais was named Man of the Match because of his amazing performance, saving quite a few shots by the Germans. Djabou's goal was dramatic because it gave the Algerians some of the hope they had lost.

Answer: Angel di Maria

Argentina showed no different from what we had seen in previous matches; poor quality, little generation of goal-scoring opportunities and very low effort. Di Maria, in my opinion the best man of the match, was rewarded for his efforts in the 118th minute when he scored the winning goal. After the World Cup ended, Di Maria was sold by Real Madrid to Manchester United.
13. Belgium played the USA in the last round of 16 match. Tim Howard was chosen as Man of the Match as he saved more than 20 goal occasions from Belgium, driving social networks crazy. How many goals were scored in extra time?

Answer: 3

The match ended 2-1 in favor of Belgium, which means that all three goals were scored in extra time! De Bruyne scored in the 93rd and Lukaku in the 105th, giving partial victory to the Europeans. Even though the USA tried with a goal by Green in the 107th, they couldn't manage to get through the round of 16.

Answer: Georginio Wijnaldum

It was very sad to watch Brazil lose in that way against Germany, as no one was prepared for that. It was notable that Brazilian players weren't yet recovered from such impact, and the Dutch easily took home the third place medal. Wijnaldum scored his second international goal, his first being in a Euro 2012 qualifier against San Marino, where the Netherlands crushed them by 11-0.

Answer: Mario Gotze

The Germans did everything well in this tournament. They defeated Portugal 4-0, destroyed Brazil 7-1, Klose tied Brazilian star Ronaldo for most goals scored in World Cups, Neuer won the best goalkeeper award, and most important of all, took the trophy home. Coach Joachim Low had been the manager for years, and it was about time these results were achieved.

Gotze scored his second goal in the Cup, his first being against Ghana, but I think we all know which was the most important...
