Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although Bart Starr was awarded the MVP award in Super Bowl I, perhaps an even better performance was turned in by one of his wide receivers. Who was this alliteratively named player who had seven catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns in Super Bowl I?

Answer: Max McGee

Of Bart Starr's 23 pass attempts 10 of them went to Max McGee who made the most of his opportunities as he torched the Kansas City Chiefs defense. McGee's two touchdowns accounted for 12/35 of Green Bay's points as he singlehandedly outscored Kansas City's 10 points. McGee's performance is even more impressive in that he was not expected to play in Super Bowl I after he violated Green Bay's curfew the night before but an injury to one of his teammates prompted coach Vince Lombardi to put McGee into the game.
2. Played in January 1982 Super Bowl XVI was narrowly won by the San Francisco 49ers thanks in large part to their kicker capping off four drives with field goals. Who was this kicker for the 49ers who was born in Austria and would play for the team for 11 seasons?

Answer: Ray Wersching

Super Bowl XVI was won by the 49ers over the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 and it was the first Super Bowl in which the winning team scored fewer touchdowns than the losing team. Wersching made field goals of 22, 23, 26 and 40 yards during the game and also had two extra points to total 14 points. Prior to Wersching, Green Bay kicker Don Chandler also made four field goals in Super Bowl II.
3. Super Bowl III was a huge upset with the 18-point underdog New York Jets winning the game 16-7. What impressive feat did the Jets defense accomplish in the game against Baltimore's star quarterbacks Johnny Unitas and Earl Morrall?

Answer: Four interceptions

Johnny Unitas started the game for the Baltimore Colts and finished just 11 of 24 for 110 yards and one interception. He was replaced by Earl Morrall who had a abysmal performance going 6 of 17 for 71 yards and three interceptions. Randy Beverly had two of these interceptions for the Jets who held the Colts to just seven points.

The Jets' quarterback Joe Namath was famously made the MVP but a great performance was also turned in by the team's running back Matt Snell who had 121 yards on 30 carries.

Answer: New England Patriots

Super Bowl LII was won by the Philadelphia Eagles 41-33 over the New England Patriots. The Patriots had stellar play by their quarterback Tom Brady who had 505 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Interestingly, one of the most productive wide receivers for the Patriots at the time, Julian Edelman, missed the Super Bowl due to an injury.
5. Although there were 41 points scored in the game Super Bowl XXXV in 2001 set a dubious record with 21 punts. Which New York Giants player got his legs a workout by punting 11 times in the game?

Answer: Brad Maynard

The New York Giants offense was stifled by the Baltimore Ravens defense scoring no points on 16 possessions in Super Bowl XXXV. The only score the Giants had was on a TD from a kickoff return as 11 of their drives ended in punts by Brad Maynard, four ended in interceptions and the final drive ended as time expired.

The final score was 34-7. For a punter Brad Maynard was drafted very high as he was selected in the third round in 1997. Maynard had a productive NFL career playing for 15 seasons in which he amassed over 55,000 punt yards.
6. The Miami Dolphins defense had a dominant game in Super Bowl VII in 1973. Which defensive lineman for the Dolphins had a super performance by recording 11 solo tackles and six assisted tackles along with a quarterback sack?

Answer: Manny Fernandez

The 14-7 victory for the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VII over the Redskins capped off an undefeated season bolstered by their balanced offensive rushing and passing attack as well as their strong defense. Although Dolphins safety Jake Scott won MVP honors by recording two interceptions, defensive lineman Manny Fernandez likely had the most dominant performance as he constantly got through Washington's offensive line and wreaked havoc on the the quarterback and ball carriers.
7. Super Bowl IX was played in January 1975 and during the game a player for the Pittsburgh Steelers had an immaculate performance as he rushed for 158 yards on 34 carries. Who was this Hall of Famer that would win MVP honors?

Answer: Franco Harris

The teams had very different playing styles with the Steelers rushing 57 times and passing only 14 times and the Vikings rushing 21 times and passing 26 times. Nicknamed the 'Steel Curtain', Pittsburgh's defense did not give up any points (Minnesota's score was off a blocked punt) helping secure a 16-6 win.
8. The New York Giants won Super Bowl XXI in 1987 behind a dominant performance from their quarterback. Who was this player that had only three incompletions on 25 pass attempts while throwing for three touchdowns?

Answer: Phil Simms

9. It isn't often where a player has over 100 interception return yards in a game. Which Denver Broncos player achieved this feat in Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999 by having two picks and 108 interception return yards?

Answer: Darrien Gordon

10. Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 showcased the versatility of a Seattle Seahawks player who led the team in rushing and also had an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Who was this wide receiver who in addition to winning this Super Bowl also won two National Championships in college with the Florida Gators?

Answer: Percy Harvin

The Seattle Seahawks had an outstanding defense over the course of the season and it was on display in Super Bowl XLVIII as the team jumped out to a 22-0 lead at halftime. The second half began with the Denver Broncos dropping a short kickoff to avoid a big return by Percy Harvin but he was able to quickly run up to the ball and take it all the way for a score. Harvin would also rush for 45 yards in the game and have a reception.

Although his athleticism and agility made him an extremely dangerous threat he was plagued by migraine headaches throughout his career that likely limited his potential.

The final score was 43-8.
