Brazil won the final 5-2 against the host Sweden. It was the first time a country had won the World Cup outside of their own continent.

Answer: Vava and Pele

Vava and Pele scored two goals each with one from Zagalo. Vava (in 1962) and Pele (1970) went on to score another World Cup Final goal each, and along with Geoff Hurst (three in 1966) set a record for most goals in the final match of the World Cup.

Italy failed to qualify for the finals after losing their final qualifying game to Northern Ireland. Having won the 1934 and 1938 World Cups, this was a very big shock. France (3rd Place), West Germany (4th Place), and USSR (Quarter finalists), all made it to Sweden.

There were 35 matches played in the tournament. Four groups consisting of four teams playing each other once meant 24 matches. The top two teams in each group went through to the quarter finals (four matches). The semi-finals, third place playoff and final made it 32 matches.

However in the group stages, if teams were level on points an extra playoff game was played and this happened three times. This made 35 matches.

Answer: France

France rattled up 23 goals and finsihed third in the tournament. They scored seven past Paraguay and two against both Yugoslavia and Scotland in the Group stage. Then they hammered Northern Ireland four-nil, scored two in their 5-2 defeat to Brazil, and finally knocked six past West Germany in the third place playoff. Brazil with 16 goals and West Germany and Sweden with 12 each were the next highest scorers.
