Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ernie Banks, a.k.a. 'Mr. Cub', played with the Cubs his entire career of 19 seasons. How many times did he lead the team with a Triple Crown, batting average, RBIs, and home runs?

Answer: 4

Banks led the team only four times, in 1955, '56, '58, and '59, and this was before the arrival of Ron Santo and Billy Williams. Billy Williams led the team many times, but between Santo and second baseman Glenn Beckert, it was tough to win a team Triple Crown with so much diverse greatness.

It is amazing that the Cubs never saw a World Series throughout all this talent in the 1960s and 1970s.
2. From 1951-1968, the great Mickey Mantle of the Yankees won the American League Triple Crown in 1956. How many Triple Crowns did he win on his Yankee team?

Answer: 3

1956 was obviously one of those seasons. He also won it in 1957 and 1958 for his team. However, with the immense talent that the Yankees had throughout the years, it was more than hard to lead the team in every batting category. Shortstop Tony Kubek, second baseman Bobby Richardson, and catcher Yogi Berra spoiled Mantle's chances many times.
3. The great Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams won two American League Triple Crown awards. In his 19 seasons from 1939-1960, how many times did he lead his team with the Triple Crown?

Answer: 6

Williams won the AL Triple Crown in 1942 and 1947. In addition to that, he led his team four more times in 1941, 1946, 1949, and 1951.
4. Ty Cobb was the first American League batter to win the Triple Crown in 1909. How many times in his 24-season career did he lead his team with that title?

Answer: 3

Other than the 1909 AL Triple Crown season, Cobb won it in 1907, then in his AL MVP season in 1911 with the Tigers. That was it. It was either Tiger teammates Sam Crawford, Bobby Veach, or Harry Heilmann who spoiled Cobb's chances to clearly lead the team. After 22 seasons with Detroit, Cobb went to the Philadelphia Athletics for his final two seasons in 1927 and 1928.
5. One of the greatest hitters in baseball history, Rogers Hornsby, had a career batting average of .358. How many times did he win a team Triple Crown in his 23-season career?

Answer: 8

After winning the team Triple Crown four times for his St. Louis Cardinals, Hornsby won the AL Triple Crown in 1922 and 1925. Moving to the Giants in 1927, he led them also. He won another team crown by doing the triple for the Cubs in 1931. Hornsby played for 23 seasons, retiring in 1937, and was inducted into the hall in 1942.
6. The Iron Horse Lou Gehrig, played for the New York Yankees from 1923-1939. Even though Babe Ruth was in town, how many times did Gehrig have a team-Yankee Triple Crown in his career?

Answer: 2

It wasn't just Babe Ruth. It were others also who always seemed to spoil Gehrig's bragging rights. They were Earl Combs, Tony Lazzeri, and later in his career, Joe DiMaggio. Gehrig's Triple Crowns came in 1934 when he won it for the American League, and a team Triple Crown in 1935.
7. Willie Mays never won a National League Triple Crown award. How many times did he win a team Triple Crown?

Answer: 7

Mays' first team Triple Crown and NL MVP both came in 1954. There were six more triples including his last in 1965, another season where Willie won the NL MVP. Orlando Cepeda and Willie McCovey prevented Mays from winning many more team Triple Crowns.
8. Eight times in San Diego Padre Tony Gwynn's 20-season career, he led the National League in battting. How many team Triple Crowns did he win?

Answer: 0

Tony led the Padres virtually every season in batting, but fell short consistently in RBIs or home runs. His season high average was .394 in 1994. He retired with a .338 career average in 2001.
9. How many Triple Crowns did Hank Aaron win?

Answer: 0

Surprisingly enough, the home run king of 755, only led the league twice in batting average, twice in hits, and four times in most home runs in a season. Aaron never won a Triple Crown and never hit 50 in a season either. At any rate, his team numbers were high enough to win it in 1957, then five more times in the '60s.

After 21 loyal seasons with the Braves, Hank spent his final two with the Milwaukee Brewers, then retired in 1976. The hall took him in 1982.
10. How many seasons did Cincinnati Red Johnny Bench win a team Triple Crown between 1967-1983?

Answer: 0

From 1967-1978, Bench was foiled by teammate Pete Rose who hit a higher average every season. Upon Rose's departure after the 1978 season, Bench was out of gas. After winning the 1968 Rookie of the Year award, he won two MVPs in 1970 and 1972. John retired in 1983, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1989.
