Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Young Eldrick Woods was a child prodigy at his chosen sport. He's gone on to set records for the most PGA tournaments won before the age of 25 and between the ages of 20 and 29. He also set records for the most wins after 25, 75 and 100 starts. He drives, chips and putts. So what sport does this 'Tiger' play?

Answer: Golf

Tiger Woods turned professional in 1996 and won his first major within a year: the 1997 Masters. As a two year old he appeared on TV (in 1978 on the "The Mike Douglas Show") demonstrating his golf prowess. He was nicknamed Tiger in honor of a Vietnamese friend of his father.

He was ranked world #1 from August 1999 to October 2010 (apart from a period of nine months from September 2004 to June 2005), and was named PGA Player of the Year a record 10 times -- all of the 13 seasons from 1997 to 2009 except three -- 1998 (won by Mark O'Meara), 2004 (won by Vijay Singh) and 2008 (won by Padraig Harrington).
2. These Bengal Tigers (Bengals) came into existence in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1966 and won their first conference championship in 1981. Wide receivers, strong safeties and four downs feature in this game of strategy, physical intimidation and speed. So which sport do these Tigers play?

Answer: American Football

The Cincinnati Bengals were a powerful team during the 1980s, reaching the Superbowl in 1981 and 1988. Both times they lost to the mighty San Francisco 49ers. These glory days were left behind as the team struggled for success in the 1990s and 2000s. The team name was inherited from an earlier Cincinnati Bengals team that played from 1937 to 1941.

The Bengals Hall of Fame was created in 2011 with five initial inductees: Paul Brown (founder, owner and coach), wide receiver Isaac Curtis, left tackle Anthony Munoz and quarterbacks, Ken Anderson and Boomer Esiason.
3. This Tigers team was founded in 1885 in a working class suburb of Melbourne. The eighteen players from each team on the oval-shaped field take overhead marks, kick torpedo punts, deliver handballs and aim for the 'big sticks' to score. The mighty Richmond Tigers won 10 premierships before the VFL expanded to become the AFL in 1990, but in which sport?

Answer: Australian Rules Football

Australian Rules Football (aka Aussie Rules) is played with an oval shaped ball, similar to a rugby ball and much broader than a gridiron ball (American Football). The object of the game is to move the ball down the field by kicking or handpassing (punching the ball off the palm of one hand with the other fist) and then kicking it through the goal posts.

The Tigers were one of the most successful teams in the VFL (Victorian Football League), winning their first title in 1920 and their tenth in 1980.

The VFL expanded beyond the state's borders in 1990 and became the Australian Football League. The club colors are black and yellow, and the club song mentions "like the tiger of old, we're strong and we're bold".
4. These Tigers come from Leicester in the English midlands. This club was established in 1880 and they play their matches on a rectangular field with H-shaped goal posts at either end. The 15 players on each side include the hooker, loose-head and tight-head props, locks and wingers, and aim to score tries by moving the ball up the field and grounding it over the goal line while engaging in fierce rucks and mauls. Which sport do these Tigers play?

Answer: Rugby Union

The league system was introduced into English Rugby in 1987 (before that it was knock-out cups and tournaments). Leicester Tigers were the first winners of the English Premiership in 1987-88, and went on to win 4 titles in the first 13 season. Starting with the 2000-01 season, end-of-season play-offs were used to determine the champions of England. Leicester Tigers were the first champions under the revised rules.

In 2001 and again in 2002 they won the European Club Championship (aka the Heineken Cup) and thus became the first team to retain their European title. The origin of the 'Tigers' nickname is not clear but one possibility is that it was inherited from the Leicestershire Regiment which, having served in India in the 19th century, had a cap-badge with a 'royal' tiger on it.
5. The Medicine Hat Tigers rely on precision passing, fast breaks, power plays and an outstanding goaltender as they play on an area of approximately 61 metres (200 ft) × 26 metres (85 ft). These Tigers have won many WHL championships and Memorial Cups. But what sport do these Tigers play?

Answer: Ice Hockey

The Medicine Hat Tigers are from Alberta, Canada and play in the Western Hockey League. They were formed in 1970 and have seen many of their go on to play in the National Hockey League. They won their first WHL title within three years in 1972-73, and their second title came in 1986-87, when they went on to win their first Memorial Cup (contested by the champions of the three leagues comprising the Canadian Hockey League).
6. These Auburn Tigers are a multi-talented group! The men's and women's teams have many NCAA titles. The most decorated US Olympian from this team is Rowdy Gaines, but Tigers from other nations have also won Olympic Gold, including Brazil's César Cielo Filho and Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry. In what sport have these Tigers made a splash?

Answer: Swimming and diving

The 'Tigers' is a generic name given to all Auburn University (Alabama) sporting teams. In addition to the outstanding performance of the swimming and diving team, the Auburn Tigers have also won NCAA Division 1 titles in Track and Field (Outdoor) and in Equestrian. They compete in the SEC (Southeastern Conference).
7. These Tigers are owned by the Hanshin Electric Railway Company and are a 'sister' team of one in Detroit. They won their first Japeanese Series title in 1985. Bunts, pop flies, knuckle-balls and RBIs are all features of the game these Tigers play. But what sport is it?

Answer: Baseball

The Hanshin Tigers represent the Osaka region and have a strong rivalry with Tokyo's Yomiuri Giants, but the latter has been far more successful to the chagrin of Hanshin's fiercely loyal supporters (they had won 16 Japanese Series titles before Hansin won their first).

The Tigers play in the historic (1924) Koshien stadium where the 55,000 fans can watch the game played on a dirt infield and natural grass outfield. They were known as the Osaka Tigers prior to 1961.
8. These Tigers, or more correctly Tigres, play for the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Mexico. They won the Primera Division Championship in 2011, their third success, and first in 29 years. In 2005, they won the InterLiga Championship in Houston, and hence qualified for the Copa Libertadores de América. In each game, the 11 players from this team try to remain onside while effectively using corners and their heads (and feet) to score. But what sport do these Tigers play?

Answer: Soccer

The Tigres were founded in 1960 and have played at the Estadio Universitario since 1967. Their nickname originates from the University's sporting history when a 1947 gridiron team played like 'tigers' to defeat the previously unbeaten 'Black Cats'. Unlike many sporting teams, their club anthem is regularly altered in both words and form and typically reflects the values of the host city of Monterrey and the state of Nuevo León.
9. This 'Tiger' was born in 1968 in Gdañsk, Poland. Dariusz Michalczewski has won world titles in the WBO, WBF and IBF groupings. This professional success occurred after a wonderful amateur career where he only lost twice in 150 encounters. Hooks, jabs, blocks and uppercuts were the tools of his trade and he was always looked after by an attentive 'second'. So at which sport did 'Tiger' Michalczewski excel?

Answer: Boxing

Michalczewski developed his boxing skills as a high level performer in Poland's state-run sports program. During his amateur career of 150 fights, 83 were won by knock-out. Highlights of his amateur career included the 1990 German National Championship and the 1991 European Championship (both as a light heavyweight).

He defected to Germany in 1988 but later represented Poland as a professional. He turned professional in 1991 and went on to win 48 of his 50 professional fights as a light heavyweight, 38 by knock-out.

He won the first 48 of these fights in a row, which put him one short of Rocky Marciano's undefeated record by a world champion and also one short of Joe Louis' all-time record for successful title defenses. He lost that 49th fight in a controversial split decision to Julio César González of Mexico in 2003.

After one more fight (a loss), he retired.
10. Bill 'Tiger' O'Reilly was a fierce competitor on the sporting field. He played 27 times for Australia between 1932 and 1946, in a career interrupted by World War II. His medium pace leg-breaks, top-spinners and googlies dismissed 144 batsmen in those games; his bowling average of 22.59 places him in the elite rank of all Test bowlers. So which sport did this Tiger play?

Answer: cricket

Tiger O'Reilly's first class career was even more impressive. He took 744 wickets for New South Wales at an outstanding average of 16.60, with a career best of 9 wickets for 38. Retrospective calculation of international bowling ratings showed that he was the premier bowler in the world for much of his career.

His batting record was rather more mundane. Only once did he pass 50 and first class and test batting averages were similar (13). After retiring he became an extremely well-respected journalist who broadcast and wrote with great wit and clarity and only retired in his early 80s due to ill-health.

He died in 1992 at the age of 86.
