Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you're a Cubs' fan, I'm sure that you remember the dramatic game against the Cardinals, when Ryne Sandberg hit 2 game-tying home runs off of reliever Bruce Sutter. But do you remember who had the eventual game winning hit?

Answer: Dave Owen

He hit a bases-loaded single in the 10th inning. I'm guessing that was the highlight of his very brief career.
2. How many members the 1984 Cubs starting rotation reached double digits in wins?

Answer: 3

Sutcliffe had 16. Trout had 13. Eckersley had 10. Tim Stoddard also had double digit wins that year, but all of his were in relief.
3. What was the Cubs' record in 1984?

Answer: 96-65

It was the best record they had in 39 years. It was also better than their '89, '98, and '03 season's records.
4. Gary Matthews led the National League in On-base Percentage in 1984?

Answer: True

His OBP was .410. Though he only hit .291, he led the league with 103 walks.
5. The '84 Cubs were assembled via the wheeling and dealing of GM Dallas Green. How many of the the everyday position players began their careers in the Cubs' system?

Answer: 0

Dernier, Sandberg, Matthews, Bowa, and Moreland, all came from the Phillies in a series of trades. Durham and Davis were acquired via the Cardinals. Ron Cey came to the Cubs through a trade with the Dodgers.
6. 1984 was a good year for the Cubs in more ways than one. In the 2nd round of that years amateur draft, they selected a key part of their 1989 division championship team. Who was it?

Answer: Greg Maddux

Jamie Moyer was also selected that year in the 6th round. Their 1st round pick was a pitcher by the name of Drew Hall, who had a rather unspectacular career with the Cubs, Rangers, and Expos, in which he amassed 9 career wins.
7. Of the every day starters for the '84 Cubs, who had the lowest batting average?

Answer: Larry Bowa

Bowa hit only .223, but brought veteran leadership and solid defense to the team. Cey hit .240, Davis hit .256, and Durham hit .279.
8. Which 2 Cubs went to the All-Star Game in 1984?

Answer: Sandberg and Davis

Sandberg was voted in by the fans. Davis was named as a reserve, behind Gary Carter.
9. How many Cubs won Gold Glove awards in 1984?

Answer: 2

Dernier won the only one of his career. Sandberg won the 2nd of his 9 consecutive Gold Gloves.
10. On what day did the Cubs take over 1st place for keeps, on their way to winning the division title?

Answer: August 1

On that day, they beat the Phillies 5-4, while the Mets got beat by the Cardinals 11-2, and they never looked back.
