Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What owner got the important 35th place position in the owner's standings?

Answer: Kyle Petty

Kyle Petty, owner/driver of the number 45 Dodge Charger got 35th place in owner's points. The position is important because for the first five races of the 2007 season, the top 35 race teams from the 2006 season are guaranteed a starting position. After that, NASCAR goes by the then current season's owner standings.
2. Where did Scott Riggs finish in points?

Answer: 20th

Riggs finished in the top 20 despite failing to qualify for the Daytona 500. In the 35 races Riggs ran, he had one top five and eight top ten finishes.
3. What was the lowest finishing position at the end of the season, of a driver who had won a race during the season?

Answer: 16th

Kurt Busch won at the first Bristol race, but struggled for much of the season. Kurt was the series champion back in 2004.
4. Terry Labonte ran during a limited schedule. How many races did he run?

Answer: 17

Terry Labonte retired after the Texas race in 2006. In 848 career races at NASCAR's premier level, Labonte had 22 wins, 2 championships (1984, 1996), 182 top fives, and 361 top tens. Labonte ran ten races for Rick Hendrick and seven for Bill Saunders in 2006.
5. What was the lowest finishing position at the end of the season of a driver who had run all 36 Nextel Cup races?

Answer: 34th

Sterling Marlin ran in all 36 races, and finished 34th. His only top ten of the season came at Richmond.
6. The highest rank for a driver who did not have a top ten finish all season was 33rd.

Answer: True

David Stremme finished 33rd (he ran in 34 races). Stremme did not run the road course events in 2006; his Felix Sabates-owned number 40 Dodge had Scott Pruett driving for those two races.
7. Where did Michael Waltrip finish in driver points?

Answer: 37th

Waltrip bought a ride for the annual Memorial Day race in Charlotte after he failed to qualify for the team he partially owns (Doug Bawel is listed as the offical owner of record). Waltrip bought the old #77 Jasper team to guarantee a starting spot for the first five races of 2006 and ran the season in the #55 Chevy Monte Carlo.

He failed to qualify for three other races and his team finished 38th in owner's points, not high enough to guarantee a starting position for the first five races of 2007.
8. The driver lowest in point standings, to start at least ten Nextel Cup races, was Bill Elliot.

Answer: False

It was Chad Chaffin, who finished 46th in points.
9. Where did David Gilliland finish in the points?

Answer: 42nd

Gilliland ran fifteen races with Robert Yates in 2006, and was thus ineligible for Rookie of the Year consideration in 2007 (he ran more than the non-ROTY candidate maximum of seven races in 2006).
10. What road course regular finished 47th in driver's points?

Answer: Boris Said

Said ran the Sonoma, Indianapolis, the second Daytona race, and Watkins Glen. At Indy, the Californian road racing standout won the pole and finished fourth; he finished 9th at Sonoma in a car owned by Jack Roush and Mark Simo. Said has won the 24 hour races at Nurburgring and Daytona.
