Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What big name player did the Detroit Tigers trade for in the offseason?

Answer: Gary Sheffield

Gary started his career with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1988. The Tigers acquired him from the New York Yankees in the offseason for Minor League pitchers Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan, and Anthony Clagget. Gary was the very first player who represented 5 different baseball teams in All-Star games.
2. Which pitcher threw a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers on June 12, 2007, winning the game by the score of 4-0?

Answer: Justin Verlander

Justin had a great career as a Detroit Tiger with accomplishments like winning the 2006 American League Rookie of the Year award, being named to 2007 American League All-Star Team, and throwing a no-hitter. He is also one of the few pitchers in the Majors that have had a fastball clocked at over 100mph.
3. Which Detroit Tigers pitcher was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals after making only 13 starts in the season?

Answer: Mike Maroth

Mike was traded on June 22, 2007, for the always interesting "player to be named later". He had been a regular in the Detroit Tigers rotation since he came up from the Minors in 2002.
4. Which Detroit Tiger was suspended for 25 games on July 6, 2007, for a second positive test for a banned stimulant?

Answer: Neifi Perez

Neifi was traded to Detroit on August 20, 2006, from the Chicago Cubs for Minor League catcher Chris Robinson. Funny enough, Neifi also popped positive for a third time on August 6, 2007, and was suspended for another 80 games.
5. How many members of the Detroit Tigers were named to the MLB All-Star game on July 10, 2007?

Answer: 6

The Tigers who represented the AL team included Carlos Guillen, Magglio Ordonez, Placido Polanco, Ivan Rodriguez, Justin Verlander, as well as manager Jim Leyland. That game saw the American League defeat the National League by the score 5-4. Sadly, the home field advantage in the World Series that was gained by the victory could not be used by the Tigers.
6. Detroit reached its highest point of games over .500 on July 23, 2007. How many games over .500 were the Tigers at that point of the season?

Answer: 21

The Tigers were 59-38 at that point of the season. If they could have only seen the collapse that would happen to them later on maybe things could have changed for the better.
7. Detroit Tiger centerfielder Curtis Granderson became a member of which exclusive club on September 7th, 2007?

Answer: 20-20-20 club

This elite club features players who have hit at least 20 doubles, 20 triples, and 20 home runs in a single season. Granderson became only the 6th player to accomplish that feat behind only Frank Schulte, Jim Bottomley, Jeff Heath, Willie Mays, and George Brett. Only 2 days later, Curtis stole is 20th base of the season which pulled him into the 20-20-20-20 club with only Willie Mays and Frank Schulte.
8. Although they didn't make the playoffs, Detroit still had one of the best all-around hitters in baseball in 2007. Which player led the majors in batting average hitting at a .363 clip?

Answer: Magglio Ordonez

Magglio did not only lead the league in batting average, he also finished second in the Majors with 139 RBIs, first in doubles with 54, and he finished second in the MVP voting behind only Alex Rodriguez. Magglio also became the only Tiger besides Al Kaline to hit two home runs in one inning when he homered twice in the 2nd inning on August 12, 2007.
9. How many games behind the Central Division champion Cleveland Indians, did the Tigers finish the season?

Answer: 8

The Tigers finished 8 games behind Cleveland in the division and 6 games behind the New York Yankees for the wildcard playoff spot. Even though they missed the playoffs, the season could still be called a success due to the fact that it was only their second time finishing a season over .500 in the past 14 seasons.
10. Whose fifth year option did the Detroit Tigers pick up on October 9, 2007?

Answer: Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez

The Tigers had the option to buy out of the contract, but I guess they thought the free agent crop of catchers was not worth it. Pudge has spent his time in the Majors in Texas, Florida and Detroit.
