Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did Harvey Kuenn win the rookie of the year award?

Answer: 1953

He was a Tiger longer than anything, including his rookie of the year season of 1953 and the year he won the A.L. batting crown in 1959. After leaving the Tigers he played for the Indians, Giants, Cubs and Phillies before retiring in 1966. He appeared on the roster, but not in a game with the Brewers in 1970.

He later managed the Brewers in 1975 (1 game) and again in 1982-83. He managed the Brewers to a World Series appearance in 1982 after taking over the team mid-season.
2. Mark Fidrych was the Rookie of the Year in 1976, but what other category did he lead the MLB in that year?

Answer: ERA

Fidrych was a complete surprise his rookie season. He barely made the roster and didn't play until April 20. He didn't make his first start until May 15. He then ran off a streak of 9 wins in 10 starts including a pair of 11 inning complete games.

By the end of the season he was the rookie of the year, and lead all of Major League Baseball in ERA with a 2.34. He also led the AL in complete games with 24, despite making only 29 starts.
3. Which superstar second baseman won the AL Rookie of the Year award in 1978, and went on to become a 5 time all star before retiring in 1995?

Answer: Lou Whitaker

Whitaker was a staple of the Tigers from the day he made his debut until the day he hung up his cleats.

His All Star game jersey from 1985 was added to the Smithsonian Museum's collection. He forgot his official jersey and didn't notice until near game time. He then bought a blank jersey from the gift shop and wrote his number on it in marker.
4. Which rookie pitcher started game one of the 2006 World Series for the Tigers?

Answer: Justin Verlander

Reyes was the rookie starter for the opponents. It was the first time in MLB history that two rookies started game one of the World Series.

Verlander was the Rookie of the Year, and later in his career won the pitching triple crown and the MVP award which is rare for a pitcher.
5. Which 2016 Tiger's pitcher won the Rookie of the Year award and nearly the ERA crown?

Answer: Michael Fulmer

Fulmer had the best ERA in the AL, but a rain-shortened final start cost him the extra couple of innings needed to officially qualify.

He started the season with the Triple A Toledo Mud Hens, but was called up in late April and never relinquished the spot in the rotation. He finished the season with 11 wins.
6. Called up the majors at just age 20, how many games did Miguel Cabrera play for the Marlins that season?

Answer: 87

Cabrera played in the minors until midseason, but was instrumental in the Florida Marlins run to the 2003 World Series Championship. He hit 4 homers and had 18 total hits in the playoffs that year.

He was traded to the Tigers in 2008 and won the batting triple crown in 2012.
7. A three time all star for the Tigers, what team did Cecil Fielder make his debut for?

Answer: Blue Jays

Fielder played his first four seasons with the Blue Jays, but never appeared in more than 82 games. He spent a season playing overseas and then returned to MLB with the Tigers in 1990. He was an all star in 1990, 91 and 93. He was the MVP runner-up in each of his first two seasons in Detroit.

His son later played the same position (1B) for the Tigers.
8. As a 19-year-old rookie Alan Trammell played in 19 games for the Tigers.

Answer: True

Trammell played his entire career in Detroit. He played from 1977 to 1998, winning silver slugger and gold glove awards, as well as making several all star teams.

Later he managed the Tigers for three seasons, including the 119 loss 2003 team.
9. Kenny Rogers finished his long career with the Tigers in 2008, but which team did he debut with in 1989?

Answer: Rangers

Rogers, who won 219 games, started his career in Texas as a relief pitcher. He ended up playing for the Rangers on three separate occasions over his career. He also played for the Yankees, Mets, Athletics and Twins.
10. Ty Cobb played his entire career in Detroit, except for the first game he played, which was for the Boston Braves.

Answer: False

Cobb debuted for the Tigers in 1905 and played with them until 1926. He then played two seasons with the Athletics before calling it a career.

He hit over .400 twice in his career and was a noted baserunner.
