Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Barry Bonds reached a 50-home run season for the first time during his 16th full season of baseball, while Babe Ruth did it in his 18th full season.

Answer: False

The Babe hit 54 in 1920 during his second full-time season of the Major Leagues, which was his seventh season. He would go on to hit over 50 three more times while Bonds would never do it again.
2. As a pitcher, Babe Ruth won 94 games compared to Bonds winning 28.

Answer: False

Bonds never saw the mound. Ruth, although playing most of his games in the outfield, also played at first base and pitched. Ruth's career pitching record was 94-46, and went 3-0 in World Series play.
3. Between these two greats, Barry Bonds led the league in home runs the most times.

Answer: False

Bonds led the league in home runs three times, including his 73 home runs in 2001. Ruth led the American League in home runs an amazing 12 times, and another three times as the runner-up.
4. Babe Ruth helped his team go to 10 World Series, while Bonds helped his team to only one.

Answer: True

The Babe went to three with the Red Sox (and won all three), then seven more as a Yankee. He hit 15 World Series home runs in his career. Bonds went to one World Series. In 2002, his Giants lost to the Angels.
5. Barry Bonds' nickname, officially recognized by Major League baseball was 'Baby Bonds'.

Answer: False

Barry had been called many things, and not many of those capable of being printed, but Major League baseball and their official site had never recognized Bonds to have a nickname. The media had called Barry, 'Baby', after his father Bobby Bonds played in the Major Leagues. Babe Ruth's most famous nicknames were, 'The Sultan of Swat' and 'Bambino'.
6. Babe Ruth hit a higher batting average in a season than Bonds did.

Answer: True

While Bonds hit .370 in 2002, and it being the only season that he hit over .365, the Babe hit over .365 six times in his career. Ruth's highest average was .393 in 1923, finishing second to Harry Heilmann of the Tigers, and just missing out on the Triple Crown.
7. The jersey number on a player's back is important for the fans to recognize just who is who. Barry Bonds jersey number was higher than Ruth's.

Answer: True

In the 'old days' of baseball, the jersey number depicted where the batter showed up in the line-up initially. Ruth wore the number 3, while his teammate and clean-up hitter Lou Gehrig, wore the number 4. Bonds wore the number 24 with the Pirates (after his godfather Willie Mays), then when he went to San Francisco in 1993, changed his number to 25 due to Mays' number 24 being retired.
8. Barry Bonds committed more fielding errors than Babe Ruth in their careers.

Answer: False

Bonds was a much better fielder than the Babe, and this wasn't close. In Ruth's 20th season of baseball, he had committed 169 while Bonds had only 90.
9. Babe Ruth retired at an earlier age than Barry Bonds.

Answer: True

When you run out of gas, that's it. Ruth retired in 1935 at the age of 40 after 22 seasons. In 2006 with Bonds hanging by a thread with poor knees, he was 42 years old in his 21st season of Major League baseball.
10. Barry Bonds won more season MVPs than Babe Ruth.

Answer: True

Bonds won an amazing seven MVPs during his career, with two coming in a Pirates uniform. Ruth's only MVP came in the 1923 season. In those days of the American League, players were limited to win only one MVP until 1933 when their rule changes allowed a player to win more. Jimmie Foxx was the first American Leaguer to win two MVPs.
