Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1960 saw the Open celebrate its centenary with the home of golf, St Andrews, the venue. Which previously unheralded Australian edged out fans-favourite Arnold Palmer to lift the claret jug?

Answer: Kel Nagle

Nagle had been quite successful on home soil, but had failed to have a single top 10 finish in any of the majors until his surprise 1960 triumph. Palmer had already won the Masters and US Open that year, and came within a single shot of making it a treble at St Andrews.
2. Arnold Palmer made up for his near miss at St Andrews (by a single shot) by winning at Royal Birkdale in 1961. Which British player pushed him all the way, losing out by a single stroke?

Answer: Dai Rees

In a tournament marred by bad weather, the final two rounds were both played on the Saturday. Palmer led Welshman Rees by a single stroke after the morning round, and, with both shooting 72 in the afternoon, the claret jug was on its way across the Atlantic for the first time since Ben Hogan's triumph in 1953.
3. In 1962, Arnold Palmer successfully defended his title with a six shot triumph over Kel Nagle. Which Scottish course was the venue for his one-sided victory?

Answer: Royal Troon

Royal Troon hosted the Open for the third time in 1962, with Palmer adding the claret jug to the green jacket he had won at the Masters earlier in the year. This year was also notable for the Open debut of a certain Jack Nicklaus.
4. Bob Charles was the champion at Royal Lytham in 1963. How did his victory make major history?

Answer: First left-handed champion

Charles, as well as being the first left-handed winner of a major, was also the first New Zealander to win one. He finished regulation play tied with American Phil Rodgers, and in those days, a marathon 36-hole play-off was used to determine a winner. Charles defeated his opponent by a conclusive eight shots.
5. The Open was back at St Andrews in 1964, and was the venue for the only ever major win by which American golfer?

Answer: Tony Lema

Lema had been in a rich vein of form in the weeks prior to the Open, and won by five strokes from Jack Nicklaus. Tragically, he was killed in a plane crash just two years later.
6. Which golfer lifted his fifth claret jug at Royal Birkdale in 1965?

Answer: Peter Thomson

Australian Thomson had already won the Open four times in the space of five years, between 1954 and 1958, and added a fifth title in 1965. He won by two shots from Brian Huggett and Christy O'Connor.
7. Jack Nicklaus won the first of his three Open titles in 1966, at which Scottish course?

Answer: Muirfield

Nicklaus completed a career grand slam in 1966 with his first Open win. He would later go on to name his own course, in Ohio, Muirfield Village, in tribute to the course where he lifted his first claret jug.
8. The 1967 Open took place at Royal Liverpool, and was won by Roberto de Vicenzo. This was the first ever Open triumph for a player from which country?

Answer: Argentina

De Vicenzo was 44-years-old when he triumphed at Royal Liverpool. The Argentine won by two shots from defending champion Jack Nicklaus.
9. The 1968 Open was played at Carnoustie, and was won by which South African golfer?

Answer: Gary Player

Player had previously won the Open in 1959, and added a second title in 1968 with a two-shot victory over Jack Nicklaus and Bob Charles.
10. Britain hadn't witnessed a "home" winner of the Open since 1951, but that all changed in 1969 at Royal Lytham with victory for which golfer?

Answer: Tony Jacklin

Max Faulkner had been the last British winner 18 years previously, but Jacklin ended the home fans' long wait with a two-shot victory over Bob Charles. He would go on to add the US Open title to his repertoire at Hazeltine the following year.
