Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On July 11, 2013, this starting pitcher made his MLB debut for the Tribe. He took a no hitter into the sixth inning against the Blue Jays and struck out seven overall in six full innings, the most strikeouts for a debuting pitcher for the Tribe since 1964. Who was this?

Answer: Danny Salazar

Salazar had absolutely electrifying stuff that he put on full display in Toronto, confounding Toronto hitters and totally overwhelming them. He looked more the part of a grizzled veteran rather than a debuting rookie. He finished the game as the winning pitcher of record.
2. In 2014, this second baseman signed a six year extension with the team. Right after doing so, he and catcher Yan Gomes, who had also received a new contract, came together in a press conference where they both publicly commended the team's ownership and emphatically praised the fanbase. Which second baseman signed a six year contract at this time?

Answer: Jason Kipnis

Kipnis praised the team's ownership for "believing in us" and, on numerous occasions, said he was "excited to be (in Cleveland)". Sadly, while few could ever question his drive to succeed, his production on the field entered an unfortunate year-by-year decline after signing this contract, and he was ultimately let go following the 2019 season.
3. Fan favorite Justin Masterson was traded amidst a downward campaign in 2014, both for himself (5.51 ERA) and the team trending out of playoff contention at the deadline. He was traded to the Cardinals in exchange for a prospect that St Louis was very high on. Which Cardinals first-round draft pick in 2012 was sent to Cleveland for Masterson's services?

Answer: James Ramsey

Ramsey, highly touted as a solid prospect, as the sixth ranked prospect in St Louis' excellent farm system at the time, sadly never panned out to anything in Cleveland. Simply put, he never proved he could produce effectively in the major leagues. Boasting a career .339 average in the minors, Ramsey can at least produce effectively there, but he never touched a major league field for the Tribe.
4. Before Terry Francona, Manny Acta tried but failed to find serious success as the team's skipper from 2010-2012. Did he at least win more games as a manager than he lost?

Answer: No

Acta ultimately was fired in September of 2012 after the team had a dismal second half of baseball. Sadly, Acta never even completed a single season with a winning record. His final overall record was 214-266.
5. In 2009, the Indians traded away former CY Young winner Cliff Lee to the Phillies. In exchange, they received a bundle of prospects, with only one player panning out of all of them. Which player, acquired in that trade, went on to play for the Tribe for over a decade?

Answer: Carlos Carrasco

Donald and Knapp never really panned out for the Tribe. Marson played for the team for four years after being acquired, but his .219 batting average left a lot to be desired, and the team parted ways with him after 2013. Carrasco, on the other hand, was the silver lining.

His major league career got off to a rather rocky start, but his ERA hovered around a solid 3.00 for four years between 2014-2018, hitting a low of 2.55 in 2014. He has never been a top level ace, but for how team-friendly his contracts have been, he has done an acceptable job filling the void left behind by Cliff Lee.
6. The Indians dealt former CY Young award winner CC Sabathia in 2008, sending him off to Milwaukee in 2008. They acquired four players in this deal. This player, initially considered a "throw in", would end up being by far the most productive piece acquired in the deal. Who is this outfielder?

Answer: Michael Brantley

Brantley played for the Indians for nine years, 2009-2018, before leaving the team for Houston. He held a career .297 average with the team over that time, while slashing 87 homers as well. He had a pretty good glove for the outfield, and was overall quite a solid player with the team.
7. After years of backlash against their "Chief Wahoo" logo, the team finally opted to move on from it and adopt a new primary logo. What year did this occur?

Answer: 2019

In 2018, the team announced that, in the following season, the Chief Wahoo logo would be removed in favor of a big red C. This came after even commissioner Rob Manfred began to encourage the move.
8. In the 2016 MLB World Series, Game Seven, this man came up huge with a game-tying two-run home run that sent the game into extra innings. Who did this for the Tribe?

Answer: Rajai Davis

Davis absolutely obliterated an offering into the left field stands to tie the ballgame up, forcing extra innings. Unfortunately, after a rain delay, the team dropped the game, the series and the trophy to the Cubs in extras in the tenth inning, 8-7.
9. In July of 2013, the aging Jason Giambi performed a feat for the team en route to a breakthrough playoff season. What did Giambi achieve?

Answer: Oldest to ever hit a walk off home run

Jason Giambi blasted one into the seats in the ninth inning to lift the Tribe to a 3-2 win over the White Sox at home, capping off the back and forth affair in style.
10. In the 2000s and 2010s, how many times were the Indians crowned champion of the AL Central division?

Answer: Five

The Indians won the division in 2001, 2007, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
