Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what division of the American League do the Indians play?

Answer: Central

The Indians are rivaled in this division by the Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox. They've played in the Central Division since its creation in the 1994 re-alignment, when each league had three divisions (previously two divisions).
2. While he was rightfully removed in 2019, the Indians' primary logo was a red-skinned man with a wide, toothy smile. What name did this man go by?

Answer: Chief Wahoo

Chief Wahoo first became the team logo in 1947. Following a series of growing and never-ending protests, as well as encouragement from the MLB office, the Indians opted to replace Wahoo as their logo for the 2019 season. It was replaced by a capital "C".
3. In the 2010s decade, the Indians had one player win the CY Young award twice. Who was this?

Answer: Corey Kluber

Sabathia and Lee did accomplish this feat, but not in the decade specified in the question. Kluber received this honor in 2014 and 2017.
4. This batter, sharing a name with a popular rock icon, was acquired by the team in a 2010 trade from the Dodgers, spent seven years as a consistent presence with the team and then, after spending one year in Philadelphia following a trade, was traded right back to Cleveland for the 2019 season. Who am I talking about?

Answer: Carlos Santana

Santana has been a steadily productive player for the Tribe, with a .271 career batting average as a member of the team, smashing 208 home runs and driving in 680 runs with the Tribe. His numbers dipped in 2018 with the Phillies, as he batted a low .229 average, but he had a renaissance campaign in his return to Cleveland in 2019.

In 2019, he tied his career high for homers in a season with 34, hit a career high .281 batting average and drove in a career high 93 runs in 158 games played.
5. In 2011, the Indians and Rockies stunned the baseball world with a trade that (pun intended) came totally out of left field. The Rockies traded an ace who had just celebrated a year anniversary since he had thrown a no-hitter to Cleveland. Who did the Rockies trade to the Tribe here?

Answer: Ubaldo Jimenez

In three years with Cleveland, Jimenez was very inconsistent. In his first season and a half, he had a brutal 5.25 ERA mired with flashes of brilliance overshadowed by ugly mistakes. Then, in 2013, Jimenez had a breakout campaign with a 3.30 ERA. He was a CY Young award contender and really carried the team to a postseason appearance in September of that year, being the winning pitcher of record in five straight starts.

Unfortunately, after 2013, the team and Jimenez reached an impasse at giving him a new contract and he signed on with the Baltimore Orioles.

There, his ERA rose as high as 6.81 in the four years he spent with Baltimore, and he was let go following the 2017 season.
6. In 2013, the Indians finally made the playoffs after a six year hiatus. They hosted that year's AL Wild Card game, taking on Joe Maddon and the Tampa Bay Rays. Did they win the game?

Answer: No

Alex Cobb and the Tampa Bay bullpen stymied Cleveland's powerful offense all game in a 4-0 shutout win. Cobb was the winning pitcher of record, while Danny Salazar took the loss.
7. Imagine this scenario: Game Seven of the 2016 World Series, the Cubs are up 6-4 on the Indians in the bottom of the eighth inning and are trying to secure their first title in over a century. The Tribe are batting: Rajai Davis swings his bat and the stands erupt! What did Davis do with this swing?

Answer: Hit a game-tying home run

Davis firmly deposited a ball into the left field stands to tie the game up at six runs apiece, giving the Indians some life and a renewed ability to win the game. Sadly, they did not, losing the game 8-7 in extra innings.
8. If you attend an Indians game, you will often hear "Roll Tribe!" shouted out. To what other team do the Indians owe this mini-cheer to?

Answer: Alabama Crimson Tide

"Roll Tide!" originated with Alabama ("the tide rolls in"), as the school first created their sports team in 1931. It is not officially known when "Roll Tribe!" was adopted by adding an R, but it most likely takes after Alabama.
9. In 1994, the Indians rebuilt and acquired a new ballpark to call home. In 2008, it received a new name. What is the name of the team's homefield?

Answer: Progressive Field

The team's homefield was known as Jacobs Field, or, "The Jake" between 1994 and 2007. In 2008, it was renamed Progressive Field following a newly acquired sponsorship deal. However, it's affectionately referred to as "The Jake" even if it's not technically accurate.
10. Former CY Young award winner Corey Kluber was traded in December 2019. Who did the Indians trade him to?

Answer: Texas Rangers

The Rangers sent over outfielder Delino DeShields and the prospect relief pitcher Emmanuel Clase. The move drew rightfully harsh criticism towards the Tribe, getting a career .220 hitter in Shields and an unproven relief pitcher for the team's definite best pitcher during the 2010s.
