One of Foreman's victims in the Olympics was the Russian champion Ionas Chepulis. Foreman scored a TKO in the second round. In his autobiography "By George", Foreman shares a story that occurred after the Olympics in which he received a call from the staff of Hubert H Humphrey to ask George if he would be willing to campaign for Humphrey for president. George accepted the offer.

Foreman was not a good student and, by his own admission, was involved in crime at a young age. He gives a great deal of credit to a number of people who helped him rise above his situation including his mother Nancy Res Nelson and his Aunt Leola. His brother, Sonny, who was ten years older than George, also had a significant impact on George helping him land one of his first jobs at Wald Transfer and Storage.
