Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What college did Spree get drafted from?

Answer: Alabama

Spree played his last couple years of college for the Alabama Crimson Tide, averaging just over 17 points per game in his last year there, before he was drafted in 1992. Before Alabama, he also attended Three Rivers Community College where he pretty much dominated.
2. Spree was born in Flint, Michigan, but spent most of his youth in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Answer: False

Actually, it was the other way around.
3. What number did Spree wear in college?

Answer: 42

15 didn't become his number until he turned pro; he wore number 8 for New York and Minnesota.
4. How many of Spree's Alabama teammates were selected before him in the 1992 draft?

Answer: 2

Spree was drafted 24th overall in 1992, after former teammates Robert Horry (by Houston) and James Robinson (by Portland). Horry is known for winning two titles with the Rockets and three with the Lakers, and for hitting some big threes in the process. James Robinson never really broke out as a player, but was remembered for the time in 1996 that he scored 20 points in 4 minutes for Minnesota.

Other than that, you may recall a little guy wearing #26 who could dunk.
5. In 1993-94, Spree hit a game-winning three-pointer against which team?

Answer: Atlanta Hawks

The game looked won for Atlanta, who were up by 2 with just under a second to play. Enter Latrell Sprewell. He hit a buzzer-beating three from the left corner on a last-ditch inbound play to beat the Hawks by a single point on their home court.
6. What unofficial record did Spree set in his second season?

Answer: Lowest drafted player to make All-NBA First Team in his second year

Players usually play a good couple seasons before they make an All-NBA Team, let alone First Team. Spree did it in his second season, not to mention that he was also (at the time) the lowest drafted player to be a second-year All-Star. At 23, he was not the youngest Warrior to be an All-Star, that record belonged to Jamal Wilkes.
7. How many dunks did Spree have in the 1997 All-Star Game?

Answer: 4

First, he had a wide open breakaway jam, followed shortly thereafter by a flying alley-oop from Gary Payton all over Dikembe Mutombo. Later, he got his own missed free throw and hammered it down Shaq-style with two hands. Finally, on a fast break, he took to the baseline and slammed one down over Scottie Pippen.

He finished with a West-leading 19 points. A great night for Spree fans everywhere.
8. Which of these did Spree not get named to while he was in Golden State?

Answer: All-NBA Second Team

As a rookie, Spree made the All-Rookie Second Team. In his second season 1993-94, Sprewell took the newly-retired Michael Jordan's spot on the All-NBA First Team, and was named to the All-Defensive Second Team for averaging 2.2 steals and 0.9 blocks per game.
9. Which record did Spree break in 2003?

Answer: Most 3-pointers in a game without a miss

In January 2003, Sprewell dropped a season-high 38 points on the L.A. Clippers, hitting 9-of-9 threes in the process. The previous record had belonged to Sam Perkins and Steve Smith, who went 8-for-8 from downtown in 1997 and 2000, respectively.
10. Before Spree got into basketball, what sport did he dream of playing professionally?

Answer: football

As a youngster, Spree was a big Dallas Cowboys fan and dreamed of going pro as a wide receiver. With his speed, he probably would have been a perennial Pro Bowler.
11. Between Golden State and New York, how many #1 draft picks have been teammates of Sprewell's?

Answer: 4

While in Golden State, Spree played alongside Chris Webber (1st pick in 1993), and later with Joe Smith (1st pick in 1995). Once in New York, Spree teamed with Patrick Ewing (1st pick in 1985) and Larry Johnson (1st pick in 1991).
12. Which of these players has never been a teammate of Sprewell in either college or pro?

Answer: John Starks

Chris Webber was a Warrior during his rookie season, teaming with Spree to lead Golden State to 50 wins and a playoff berth in 1993-94. Marcus Camby, of course, was instrumental in making the Knicks the first 8th seeded team to reach the Finals in 1999 (Spree's first year with New York), and was one of his best friends on the team until Camby left for Denver. Robert Horry played alongside Sprewell for the Alabama Crimson Tide in his NCAA days. John Starks, who is now retired, never played alongside Spree, in fact Starks was one of the players the Knicks traded to the Warriors to acquire him.
13. What was Sprewell's best offensive season as a Warrior?

Answer: 1996-97

Sprewell set new career highs that year in scoring (24.2 per game, 5th in the League) and assists (6.3 per game, 18th in the League and #1 among non-point-guards). He also led the West with 19 points in the '97 All-Star Game.
14. Sprewell has appeared in a commercial for all of the following shoe makers except which one?

Answer: Fila

Spree's first endorsement deal came from Converse, and I can recall at least one TV ad featuring him. When he went to New York he joined the And 1 lineup, and his most memorable ad was the one with Jimi Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner playing in the background as Spree tells us he is the American Dream. Finally, though he never endorsed Nike, in his second season, Spree was featured in a Chris Webber commercial.

The two of them were in a barber shop laughing about Webber dunking all over Charles Barkley.

He has never been in a Fila commercial, and that won't change, since Fila no longer contracts players to endorse their basketball sneakers.
15. Why didn't Sprewell keep the number 15 when he joined the Knicks?

Answer: The number was retired

The Knicks retired number 15 in honor of Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, one of the franchise's greatest players.
