Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the 777th Australian to become a Wallaby?

Answer: Dan Vickerman

Vickerman, along with fellow locks David Giffin and Nathan Sharpe, is a tough nut and a solid player. Raised in South Africa, Vickerman does not get large amounts of game time due to the skill and experience of the aforementioned locks.
2. Who captained the Wallabies during their first ever Grand Slam title in 1984, three years before the first World Cup?

Answer: Andrew Slack

Mark Ella was dropped from captain by Alan Jones who gave it to Slack. Ella did score a try in each of their internationals though, a first by anyone. Farr-Jones was still coming up through the ranks at this time but would become captain, and Poidevin was playing strongly and would also captain the Wallabies.
3. David Campese played in exactly 100 rugby internationals.

Answer: False

Campese actually played in 101 tests. He scored 64 tries and invented the now famous rugby move, the goose step.
4. Australia was the only country able to beat South Africa in a RWC match between 1987 (the first RWC) and 1999.

Answer: True

Unfortunately the Boks were unable to play in the 1987 and 1991 WC due to a sporting boycott in their nation. South Africa returned in '95 and proved their dominance, winning the first WC they paticipated in. South Africa were beaten once in the 1999 WC vs. Australia in the semi-final. Score = 27-21 (extra time). Of course, SA was defeated by both England and New Zealand in 2003.
5. Australia has always worn gold jerseys.

Answer: False

During the 1999 RWC, Australia played Romania wearing a new look green jumper.
6. Daniel Herbert played for the Wallabies before George Gregan did.

Answer: True

Centre Herbert was the 715th Aussie to pull on a Wallabies jersey, two spots in front of (then) future captain, Gregan (717th).
7. On August 3, 2002, a streaker ran onto the field during a Wallabies vs. NZ encounter. What company logo was he wearing, painted on his back?

Answer: Vodafone

The streaker was apprehended in reasonable time by the authorities and was fined.
8. Which of the following Australia coaches was the most successful, winning the most coveted trophies?

Answer: Rod MacQueen

Supercoach MacQueen won many important trophies including the Bledisloe, Tri Nations and World Cup. He won series' against Argentina and led several successful overseas campaigns. He also became the first Australian coach to defeat the British and Irish Lions in 2001. Bob Dwyer won the World Cup in 1991 and Alan Jones won the Grand Slam in 1984.
9. Who defeated the Wallabies in the 1987 RWC semi-final, denying them a finals spot?

Answer: France

The match was won in the last two minutes with a late try to France, scored by superstar fullback Serge Blanco. New Zealand defeated France in the final to win the first World Cup.
10. Jason Jones-Hughes played in the centres for the NSW Waratahs, and looked set to make appearances for the Wallabies before playing for a different country. Which country was it?

Answer: Wales

Jones-Hughes was allowed to play for Wales due to family ties, that is, his grandfather. This sort of action has been stopped but not before many players moved to foreign countries such as Japanese fly-half Andy Miller.
