Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first NFL quarterback to throw 3000 pass completions?

Answer: Fran Tarkenton

The others never threw 3000 completions, and weren't close. Tarkenton played his career from 1961-1978. His first six seasons were with the Vikings, then five with the Giants before moving back to Minnesota for another seven seasons. He reached the 3000 plateau in 1976 with the Vikings, and retired with 3686 passes caught. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame 10 years later.
2. Which of these 3000 Club members never took their team to a Super Bowl appearance?

Answer: Warren Moon

Warren had 3988 completions in his 17 seasons with Houston, Minnesota, Seattle, and Kansas City. Moon set a record in 1994 with the Oilers by having 404 pass completions, the first quarterback to ever complete 400 in a season. He led the league two other times in completions.

He also had four tremendous seasons of passing for over 4000 yards in each one. He retired in 2000 with 291 touchdowns from the air.
3. Who was the first San Diego Charger quarterback to throw 3000 pass completions?

Answer: Dan Fouts

Fouts was a third round pick out of Oregon in the 1973 NFL draft. He was a career San Diego Charger from 1973-1987. Four times Dan threw over 300 completions in a season, and threw for over 3000 yards in six seasons. The number 14 was a six-time Pro Bowler, and inducted into the hall in 1993.
4. The 3000 Completion Club apparently wasn't good enough for this quarterback who was the first-ever to throw 6000 career completions. Who is this quarterback?

Answer: Brett Favre

With the familiar number 4 on his back, Favre was in his 20th season in 2010, playing with the Vikings. Brett became a sole member of the 6000 Club in 2009 in his first season with the Vikings. He also became the sole member of the 5000 Completion Club in 2006 with the Packers. Going back in time, he became a member of the 4000 Club in 2004, and a member of the 3000 Club in 2000.
5. Becoming a member of the 3000 Club is pretty elite. Who wasn't satisfied with 3000, and really pushed the envelope to become the first member of the 4000 Pass Completion Club?

Answer: Dan Marino

The others never completed even 3000 career passes. Marino played his entire career with the Dolphins from 1983-1999. He completed a career record 4967 passes. He led the league six times in completions, and threw over 300 in 12 seasons each. He was only one of two quarterbacks in the 20th century to achieve 4000 completions.
6. Of these 3000 Completion Club members, which one retired with the most touchdown passes?

Answer: John Elway

Surprisingly, all three threw more than the great Joe Montana. Joe had 273, Testaverde threw 275, and Moon threw 291. Elway played his entire career as a Denver Bronco from 1983-1998. Amongst his 4123 career pass completions were exactly 300 touchdown passes, with his final TD pass of his career going to Shannon Sharpe. Elway also threw for over 3000 yards in a season 12 times.
7. Which of these quarterbacks was the youngest when he reached 3000 pass completions?

Answer: Drew Bledsoe

Montana was 37 in 1993 when he hit this milestone. Kerry Collins was 35 in 2005, and Elway reached 3000 in 1994 at the age of 34. Bledsoe was 31 years old in 2003 as a member of the Bills in his second season with Buffalo. He played seven seasons prior with the Patriots. His two final seasons were with Dallas, and retired in 2006 with 3839 career completions.
8. The more passes thrown, thus the more touchdowns, but also the more interceptions that would go against a quarterback's record. Which of these 3000 Completion Club members had the fewest interceptions in their career?

Answer: Joe Montana

This wasn't close. Of this group, Marino had the highest with 252, Fouts with 242, and Moon threw 233. Montana played 13 of his 15 seasons with the 49ers, then his final two with the Chiefs, retiring in 1994. Joe threw 273 touchdowns while giving up 139 interceptions. Joe is also a member of the 40,000 Yard Passing Club.
9. Which of these club members was not born in Pennsylvania?

Answer: Donovan McNabb

Collins was born in Lebanon, Marino in Pittsburgh, and Montana in New Eagle. McNabb, the once 11-season Philadelphia Eagle was born in Chicago, Illinois. Donovan became a member of the Washington Redskins in 2010. He guided the Eagles to Super Bowl XXXIX in February 2005, but lost to the Patriots 24-21.
10. Which of these club members did not wear the same uniform number throughout their entire NFL career?

Answer: Joe Montana

Moon wore the number 1, Elway donned the number 7, and Marino was with the familiar number 13. Montana played in 13 seasons with the 49ers from 1979-1992 while wearing the number 16. He signed with the Chiefs in 1993 and took on the number 19. The number 16 had been already retired by the Chiefs in honor of quarterback Len Dawson.
