Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This tremendous franchise began with the new American League in 1901, and the team was named the Baltimore Orioles. After moving to New York, what team name did they take up?

Answer: Highlanders

After moving from Baltimore in 1902, they became the Highlanders in 1903. Their first season in New York gave the fans a 72-62 record, good enough for third place. The infamous name of "Yankees" later came in 1913.
2. After six seasons with the Red Sox, most of the world was shocked to see Babe Ruth carted off to the Yankees after the 1919 season, especially after seeing Ruth set a new season record by hitting 29 home runs. How many did the Babe hit in his first season as a Yankee?

Answer: 54

None of the others were Babe's season total during his career. Ruth not only smashed the record with his 54 in 1920, but would hit 59 the following season. The Bambino hit over 50 in a season, four times.
3. After the acquistion of Babe Ruth to the Yankees, how many seasons would it take the team to appear in a World Series?

Answer: 2

Ruth's first season was in 1920, and the Yankees finished third behind the Indians and White Sox. In 1921, with the help of Ruth's 59 home runs and another 24 from Bob Meusel, they found themselves in their first World Series. Pitcher Carl Mays made a nice rebound and led the team with a 27-9 record, one season after the death of Indians' Ray Chapman who he was beaned by Mays.

The Yankees lost to the New York Giants in the World Series, would lose again in 1922, then finally win it all against the Giants in 1923 for their first crown.
4. Who was the first Yankee to win multiple American League MVP awards?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

All the others won it three times, and Gehrig only twice, but it was Lou who won the award first in 1927, the season that Ruth hit 60 home runs, then duplicated the award in 1936. Gehrig also won the Triple Crown in 1934, in Babe Ruth's last season as a Yankee.
5. In 16 seasons from 1931-1946, manager Joe McCarthy took the Yankees to the World Series eight times. Of those eight trips, the Yankees lost only once. Not to be out-done, from 1949-1960, which manager took the team to 10 World Series in 12 seasons?

Answer: Casey Stengel

All except for McGraw were Yankee managers, but it was Stengel who kept the egos together in the style of "let's just play baseball". Casey and the Yankees lost three of those World Series. They won five consecutive from 1949-1953.
6. Who was the first Yankee to win the Cy Young award?

Answer: Bob Turley

The others never played for the Yankees. The award began in 1956, in honor of the great Cy Young who died in 1955. Turley was the third winner of the award in 1958 for his 21-7 record. Don Newcombe of the Dodgers and Warren Spahn of the Braves won the award ahead of Turley. Whitey Ford was the next Yankee to win the award in 1961. It was both Turley's and Ford's only Cy Young award.
7. After 14 consecutive seasons with no World Series appearances, which manager in his first season with the Yankees, not only had a World Series appearance, but won the whole thing in 1996?

Answer: Joe Torre

The others were all Yankee managers, but had all died before 1996. After managing the Mets, Braves, and Cardinals, George Steinbrenner hired Torre after giving Buck Showalter the rope. Joe took the team to a 92-70 record, and a four games to two win over the Braves in the series. In Joe's first five seasons in the pinstripes, he took the club to four World Series crowns.
8. In the first 100 years of the franchise, there were three Yankees who hit 50+ home runs in a season. One was Babe Ruth who did it multiple times. Who were the other two Yankees that not only did it, but both did it in the same season?

Answer: Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle

None of the others hit 50 home runs in a season. The magical 1961 season of the Yankees had the AL MVP in Maris who hit 61, Mantle who hit 54, and Cy Young winner Whitey Ford. This all equated to 109 wins in the season, and a World Series win over the Reds, four games to one. Mantle also hit 52 in 1956 with his Triple Crown season.
9. In 2007, who was the first Yankee to hit 25 home runs in the season?

Answer: Alex Rodriguez

By the time A-Rod had hit 28 before the all-star break, the others hit only 5. Rodriguez was in his 14th season in the Majors with the Yankees, after playing for the Mariners and Rangers.
10. By the 100th anniversary of the franchise, there was only one pitcher who'd won 30 games in a season; and he did it when he won 41. Which pitcher did this in 1904?

Answer: Jack Chesbro

The others weren't born yet. It would be Jack's only 30-win season also when he went 41-12 in 1904 with the Highlanders. In 1908, Chesbro became a Yankee 20-game loser also. He would retire with a respectable 198-132 record after only 11 seasons.
