Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Philadelphia franchise began in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers. Which league did they play in?

Answer: National League

The other leagues did not exist yet. The Quakers joined the National League along with the new New York Giants in 1883. Philadelphia went 17-81 in their first season. John Coleman was their leading pitcher and went 12-48 in the season. They would improve over their next four seasons, and finish second in 1887 going 75-48. 1890 would see the famous 'Phillies' name with the team for the first time.
2. The Major Leagues officially began in 1901, with the National and American League. The Phillies finished off their first Major League season in second place with a 83-57 record. They had three 20-game winners in the season. Which team did Philadelphia take a backseat to in the season?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

None of the other teams existed yet by name. The Pirates won three consecutive NL pennants from 1901-1903. Bill Shettsline led this Phillie team to a more than respectable finish in 1901. The team's three 20-game winners were Al Orth, Red Donahue, and Bill Duggleby. Elmer Flick led the team with his bat.
3. The Phillies had a fantastic arm in their early days. This pitcher won 30 games in a season three times, and threw two Triple Crowns for the franchise. Who is this 1938 Hall of Fame inductee?

Answer: Pete Alexander

Grover Cleveland "Pete" Alexander was a 1911 Phillie rookie. He went 28-13 in the season, and the Phillies knew that they had something. From 1915-1917, Pete reached the 30-win barrier each season. His Triple Crowns came in 1915 and 1916, then he won another as a Chicago Cub in 1920. Alexander's career record was 373-208, tied for third all-time with Christy Mathewson for wins when Pete retired in 1930. Alexander had five more hits in his career compared to his wins with 378.
4. The Phillies had a slugger who hit .400 three times in his great career. Who was this whose career was shortened by a mysterious death?

Answer: Ed Delahanty

Ed was one of five baseball brothers, the others being Frank, Jim, Joe, and Tom. Ed was the elder of them all. He hit .407 in 1894, then .404 in 1895. His third trip to the .400-mark was in 1899 when he batted .410. Delahanty was in an accident in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on July 2, 1903.

It was never determined whether he fell, jumped, or was pushed in the incident. Ed was a Washington Senator at the time of his death. He was a 1945 Hall of Fame inductee.
5. 1915 saw the Philadephia Phillies win the National League pennant under manager Pat Moran. Whose bat led the NL in RBIs, runs, home runs, and total bases in the season?

Answer: Gavvy Cravath

Cravath was in his fourth season with the Phillies in 1915 when he tore the league up. Pete Alexander led the team with a 31-10 season, and Erskine Mayer threw a 21-15 season. The Phillies lost the World Series to the Red Sox, four games to one.
6. The Phillies went through a dry spell between NL pennants for 35 seasons, and finally bagged their second flag in 1950. Philadelphia fans were disappointed when which team, who won their second of five consecutive World Series, skunked them four games to none?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees were unstoppable from 1949-1953 under Casey Stengel. The Phillies were no slouch either, going 91-63 in the season, hitting 125 home runs, and with pitcher Robin Roberts throwing a 20-10 record. Eddie Sawyer had the helm of the Phillies in 1950.
7. 1980 was a storybook season that some teams could only dream about. The Phillies had the season Cy Young winner in Steve Carlton, and the NL MVP in third baseman Mike Schmidt. It was also their manager's first full season in the big leagues. Who was this manager that took the Phillies to their first World Series crown?

Answer: Dallas Green

To show how balanced the 1980 roster was, only one full-time player hit over .300 in the season, and that was outfielder Bake McBride. Pitcher Dick Ruthven also went 17-10 in the season. Green's first taste of MLB managing came in 1979 when he replaced Danny Ozark for the last 30 games of the season. Everything came together quick in 1980, and the Phillies found themselves on top of the hill after defeating the Kansas City Royals in the World Series.
8. The Phillies' franchise has a history of many ballparks that they played in. They began it all in Recreation Park, then the Philadelphia Baseball Grounds, the legendary Baker Bowl, Shibe Park, Connie Mack Stadium, Veterans Stadium, and which other ballpark that the team moved to in 2004?

Answer: Citizens Bank Park

For 33 seasons, the Phillies played in their beloved Veterans Stadium from 1971-2003. Citizens Bank Park was built in two and a half years, and opened for the 2004 season. Owned by the city of Philadelphia, its first season set a new yeam record for attendance with 3,250,092 fans.

This was the second time in the franchise's history that they topped the three million mark in attendance.
9. Which of the following pitching greats won more games in a Phillies uniform than the others?

Answer: Steve Carlton

All four were Phillie greats in their era. Carlton topped the list by winning 241 of his 329 career wins in Philadelphia. Alexander was a Phillie for eight of his 20 seasons. While winning 373 in his career, he won only 190 for Philadelphia. Roberts played 14 of his 19 seasons with the Phillies, winning 234 games. Bunning played for Philadelphia in only six seasons, and didn't contribute 100 games to the team.
10. Which Phillies shortstop won two Gold Glove awards, then later became the manager of the team?

Answer: Larry Bowa

Bowa donned the Phillies uniform from 1970-1981. His Gold Gloves came in 1972 and 1978. Larry became the manager of the team from 2000-2004, and helped the Phillies win at least 80 games in each season. In 2005, fans saw Charlie Manuel hold the reins of the team.
