Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what season did the Athletics first call Shibe Park home?

Answer: 1909

From 1901 to 1909, the Athletics called Columbia Park home and won AL pennants in 1902 and 1905. The first home game in Shibe Park was played April 12, 1909, when the Athletics won 8-1 against the Boston Red Sox.
2. On May 18, 1912, the Athletics played a home game against a team of replacement players, because the regulars of that team were on strike. What team had gone on strike that day?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Three days earlier in New York, Ty Cobb had gone into the stands after a heckler. As a response, American League president Ban Johnson suspended Cobb. Cobb's Tigers' teammates supported Cobb by going on strike. Faced with a fine by the league for not fielding a team, the Tigers' owners recruited a group of Philadelphia sandlot players to wear Tiger uniforms that day.

The Athletics won the game 24-2. The strike lasted just one game as the regular Tigers returned for the next game.
3. When the Athletics scored 10 runs in the seventh inning of game four of the 1929 World Series against the Chicago Cubs, that game took place at Shibe Park.

Answer: True

The greatest comeback in World Series history, the Athletics were losing 8-0 when they scored 10 runs to take the lead. They would win the game 10-8 and take a 3-1 lead in the series. The Athletics would close out the series in the next game.
4. Who hit their 500th career home run at Shibe Park/Connie Mack Stadium?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

Foxx hit his 500th career home run on September 24, 1940, at Shibe Park against the Athletics' George Caster. The Red Sox won the game 16-8.
5. In what year did the Phillies move full-time to Shibe Park?

Answer: 1938

The Phillies played their first game as a regular tenant of Shibe Park, after playing their home games at the Baker Bowl, on July 4, 1938. They split a doubleheader with the Boston Bees that day, losing the first game 5-10 and winning the second game 10-2.
6. Who did the Athletics play in the first American League regular season night game, which was played at Shibe Park?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The game was played on May 16, 1936, with the Indians winning 8-3.
7. How many all-star games were played at Shibe Park/Connie Mack Stadium?

Answer: 2

In 1943, the American League won the first all-star game played at Shibe, winning 5-3. In 1952, the National League won the second all-star game, 3-2, in a game shortened to 5 innings because of rain.
8. In what year was the name of the ballpark changed from Shibe Park to Connie Mack Stadium?

Answer: 1952

Mack had resisted renaming the stadium in his honor for many years. However, in 1952, while Mack was in Florida, the board of directors renamed the stadium in honor of him. It would remain Connie Mack Stadium even after the Athletics had been sold and moved to Kansas City following the 1954 season.
9. Which of the following events did not take place at Shibe Park/Connie Mack Stadium?

Answer: Detroit's John Neun turns an unassisted triple play

Neun actually turned in his triple play on March 31, 1927 in Detroit against the Cleveland Indians. The other events all took place in Philadelphia (Gehrig on June 3, 1932, Williams on September 28, 1941, and Lazzeri on May 24, 1936).
10. Who did the Phillies play in the last home game ever played at Connie Mack Stadium?

Answer: Montreal Expos

The Phillies beat the Expos 2-1 in 10 innings on October 1, 1970, to win the last game ever played there. Oscar Gamble drove in Tim McCarver with the winning run.
