Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Though Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-jabbar toiled for 14 years with the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he won an amazing five championships, he actually began his career in another city. With what team did Kareem start his NBA career?

Answer: Milwaukee Bucks

Though Kareem is best known for his five championship rings won with the Lakers, he actually played his first six seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he won his first NBA championship ring in 1971. He was traded to the Lakers in 1975 for Elmore Smith and three other players. Oops!
2. Jeff Hornacek is perhaps best remembered as the shooting guard for the Utah Jazz who helped lead the team to two NBA finals in the late 1990s, but with what team did Mr. Hornacek break into the league?

Answer: Phoenix Suns

Hornacek played his first six years in Phoenix, where he helped make the team a Western Conference contender. In 1992, he was part of the trade that sent Charles Barkley to Phoenix. After a year and a half in Philadelphia, the Jazz traded Jeff Malone in order to garner Hornacek's services. He played his last six and a half seasons with the marvelous, wonderful Jazz.
3. Tracy McGrady, aka T-Mac, made his move into the NBA directly from high school in 1997. Though he is perhaps best known for his work with the Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets, he played his first three seasons with which NBA team?

Answer: Toronto Raptors

McGrady started very slowly with the Raptors, averaging only 7 points and 9.3 points in his first two seasons, respectively. His career really blossomed after being traded to the Magic in the year 2000. He averaged 26.8 points a game during his first season in Orlando.

In 2004, McGrady was part of that big trade that sent Houston players Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato to Orlando for McGrady and several others.
4. Alex English is revered in Denver, where he played ten and a half amazing seasons with the Nuggets. But with what team did this high scoring forward make his modest start in the NBA as a rookie in 1976?

Answer: Milwaukee Bucks

Like Kareem, Alex English started out as a Buck. In two unspectacular seasons with Milwaukee he averaged fewer than ten points per game. He was moved to Indiana, where he played another season and a half before being acquired by the Nuggets. He averaged 20 points or more per game for nine full seasons with Denver. His last season was played with the Dallas Mavericks.
5. John Havlicek is beloved in Boston where he played the guard position for 16 years. Was Boston his first NBA team?

Answer: Yes

Indeed, John 'Hondo' Havlicek played for Boston throughout his entire career, from 1962 to 1978. There he won eight NBA titles. Not only did he play all 16 seasons of his career there, he was drafted by the Celtics as well. One thing I'll bet you didn't know, however, he was also drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1962.
6. Which one of these Utah Jazz greats did not begin his career with the team?

Answer: Adrian Dantley

In consecutive seasons, the Jazz selected Thurl Bailey (1983), John Stockton (1984) and Karl Malone (1985) in the first round of the NBA draft. Adrian Dantley, though known as Utah's highest scoring player in the early 1980s, was originally a Buffalo Brave when he entered the NBA in 1976.

He went on to play for the Pacers, Lakers, Jazz, Pistons, Mavs and Bucks, but he is best known for his time with the Jazz, where he scored 30 points or more a game four different seasons!
7. Mitch Richmond was a quiet, unassuming, high scoring guard that could really light it up in the 1990s. Though he played half his seasons for the up-and-coming Sacramento Kings, he did not begin his career there. With which team did Richmond start out as a rookie in 1988?

Answer: Golden State Warriors

As a matter of fact, for his first three seasons with the the Golden State Warriors, Mitch Richmond was the 'M' in the amazing offensive trio 'Run TMC' (the 'T' being Tim Hardaway and the 'C', Chris Mullin). Richmond averaged over 20 points per game in his first 10 NBA seasons. After Sacramento, he played for Washington and the Lakers.
8. Though forward Joe Smith is perhaps best known for being involved in a salary-cap tampering scandal in 1998 with the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Wolves were not his first NBA team. With which team did Smith enter the NBA in 1995?

Answer: Golden State Warriors

Smith started out with the Warriors in 1995, and played two and a half seasons there before being traded to Philadelphia. In 1998, he signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves for below market value, and it was later learned that a verbal agreement had been made that, if he signed for below market value, he would receive a much larger contract the following season.

The T-Wolves got in big trouble for this, and Smith moved on to the Pistons for a season before returning to Minnesota. He later played for Milwaukee.
9. Which of these Boston Celtic greats of the 1980s was not originally a member of the Celtics during his career?

Answer: Robert Parish

The Golden State Warriors have made the mistake of giving away many a great player in their history, and things were no different in 1980 when they traded the 'Chief' to the Boston Celtics. Parish played his first four seasons with the Warriors before playing 14 seasons with the Celtics, where he won three NBA titles. He completed his career in Charlotte and Chicago.
10. Ron Artest became notorious in 2004 when he got into a fight with a fan in the stands during a game between the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons. Did he begin his ill-fated career with the Pacers?

Answer: No

In fact, Ron Artest spent his first two years with the Chicago Bulls, from 1999-2001, before moving on to the Pacers. After slightly longer than four seasons with the Pacers, this great defensive player with behavioral difficulties was traded to the Sacramento Kings.
