Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which player set a record for hitting 40+ home runs in seven consecutive seasons?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Hank Aaron hit 40+ consecutively once in 1962 and 1963. The 'Say Hey Kid' did it consecutively three separate times, and the great Ted Williams never 40+ in consecutive seasons. The Babe did this from 1926-1932 and all with the Yankees. Ruth's season high was 60 in 1927. Ruth hit 40+ home runs in a season an amazing 11 times in his 22 seasons.
2. Which speedster set a record for stealing 50 consecutive bases without being caught?

Answer: Vince Coleman

Coleman of the St. Louis Cardinals was a Rookie of the Year in 1985. He went on to steal 100+ bases in three consecutive seasons from there. From 1988-1990, Vince stole a consistent 65+ in each season while leading the league in each season. He also stole six bases in the 1987 World Series against the Twins.

Then his legs went away. In 13 seasons, Coleman stole 752 bases. Vaughn stole 30 bases in his entire career, and Yastzemski stole 168 over 23 seasons. Wells was a pitcher and never stole a base in his career.
3. In 1968, which National League pitcher set a record for throwing six consecutive shutouts?

Answer: Don Drysdale

The others listed had retired from baseball long before. From May 14 through June 4, 1968, the career Los Angeles Dodger threw them all. Drysdale also set a consecutive scoreless inning streak which was later broken by Orel Hershiser, another Dodger pitcher. Don was also the National League Cy Young Award winner in 1962.

He was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1984, then sadly died at the age of 56 in 1993.
4. In 2002, this pitching great set a record for striking out 300+ batters in five consecutive seasons. Who was this flame thrower?

Answer: Randy Johnson

The others never threw 300 strikeouts in a season even one time. From 1998-2002, Johnson played for the Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, and Arizona Diamondbacks. Randy won the American League Cy Young Award with the Mariners, then four consecutive Cy Young awards from 1999-2002 with the Diamondbacks. He also threw for a Triple Crown in 2002.
5. How about a pitcher throwing over 84 consecutive innings without giving up even one base on balls? Which pitcher did this in 1962?

Answer: Bill Fischer - Kansas City Athletics

Closing out 100 seasons of Major League Baseball, the others listed were 1, 2, and 3 in giving up the most walks in a career, and never came even close to Fischer's record. Fischer pitched for four different teams in nine seasons from 1956-1964. Bill threw 84.1 innings from August 3 to September 30, 1962, without giving up a walk, an amazing feat of control.

In his nine seasons, he gave up a career total of only 210 base on balls, which averaged one in every 3.96 innings.
6. With an amazing streak in Major League Baseball history, which pitcher ran a 12-season consecutive streak of winning 20+ games per season?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

Spahn was the only other pitching great to come close with six consecutive seasons of 20 wins. Christy Mathewson, one of the all-time pitching greats of baseball, won 20+ in every season from 1903-1914. He also won 30+ games in a season, four times in his career. He won 373 career games and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the initial induction ceremony in 1936.
7. Which pitcher was the first in Major League history to throw two consecutive no-hitters?

Answer: Johnny Vander Meer

Johnny Vander Meer played 11 of his 13 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. In two consecutive starts on June 11 and 15, 1938, he pulled off the two no-hitters. Johnny's best season was when he went 18-12 in 1942. From 1941-1943, he led the National League for strikeouts in all three seasons.
8. Which Hall of Fame pitcher and New York Met set a record for striking out 10 consecutive batters in a game in 1970?

Answer: Tom Seaver

The others listed were never Mets and were not pitchers. In April 1970, Seaver struck out 10 consecutive San Diego Padre players. 'Tom Terrific' as he was nicknamed, won three Cy Young Awards in 1969, 1973, and 1975. Tom took one World Series ring with the 1969 Mets in a win over the Baltimore Orioles. He was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1992.
9. Nolan Ryan, the great strikeout king played in 27 seasons of baseball, tying a record for most seasons. Whose record of longevity did Nolan tie?

Answer: Cap Anson

Ryan played from 1966-1993 with four baseball teams. Anson began his career in 1871 in the first professional and organized baseball league with the Rockford Forest Citys of the National Association. He spent five seasons with them, then another 22 seasons with the National League's Chicago organization.

It was well documented that Anson, who became a manager later in his career, was one of the most prejudice baseball figures in history.
10. The Gold Glove Award began in the 1957 season. Jim Kaat, a pitcher from 1959-1983, won an amazing 16 consecutive Gold Gloves. He was not the first player to do this. Who was the first player in history to win 16 consecutive Gold Gloves?
