Ajax had made their first appearance in the European Cup final in 1969, where they had been defeated by Italian side AC Milan. Two years later, at the end of the 1970-71 season, the club reached the final for a second time, having defeated opponents from Albania, Switzerland, Scotland and Spain en route.

The final was played on 2 June 1971 at Wembley Stadium in London, with Ajax beating Greek champions Panathinaikos, who were appearing in their first final, by two goals to nil. Ajax's triumph was the first of three successive victories in the European Cup, with the club going on to beat Italian sides Inter and Juventus in 1972 and 1973 respectively.

Bayern Munich's appearance in the 1974 European Cup final was their first in the competition. The club defeated opponents from Sweden, East Germany, Bulgaria and Hungary en route to the final against Spanish champions Atlético Madrid, who were also appearing in their first final.

The game, which was played at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels on 15 May 1974, ended in a 1-1 draw. As a result, a replay was held two days later; this saw Bayern run out convincing winners 4-0. Bayern's victory was the first of three successive titles for the club in the European Cup, with English club Leeds United and French side Saint-Étienne beaten in 1975 and 1976 respectively.

Chelsea first reached the Champions League (the rebranded European Cup) final in 2008, where they lost to their rivals Manchester United in a penalty shoot-out. Four years later, they reached a second final, having qualified for the tournament's knock-out stage by winning their Champions League group, and then defeating clubs from Italy, Portugal and memorably Spain - despite winning the first leg of their semi-final against Barcelona, Chelsea found themselves 2-0 down and with only ten men in the second leg at Camp Nou, before coming back to draw 2-2 and win the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

Their opponents were Bayern Munich, appearing in their ninth European Cup final, with the game played at Bayern's own stadium, the Allianz Arena, on 19 May 2012.

Despite Bayern taking the lead in the 83rd minute, the game finished 1-1 after extra time. In the resulting penalty shoot-out, Chelsea won 4-3, making it the second time in the competition's history that an English side had won the trophy on the home ground of their opponent (Liverpool had beaten AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome in 1984).

Juventus's appearance in the 1985 European Cup final was their third overall, having reached the final in 1973, losing to Ajax, and 1983 where they lost to Hamburg SV. The club got past opponents from Finland, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia and France on their way to the final against English champions Liverpool.

The game was held on 29 May 1985 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. Although the game itself ended in a 1-0 win for Juventus, the occasion was marred by rioting that led to the deaths of 39 people, mostly fans of the Italian side, in what came to be known as the Heysel Stadium disaster. Juventus's victory in 1985 made them the first club to have won all three UEFA competitions, for which they were awarded a special commemorative plaque by the European governing body.

The 1968 European Cup final was Manchester United's first appearance at this stage of the competition, having reached the semi-final on three previous occasions. Their most notable semi-final appearance was in 1958, when the club, having been victorious in their quarter-final against Red Star Belgrade, was involved in an air crash after that game that resulted in the deaths of 23 people, including eight members of the first team. Manchester United got past opponents from Malta, Yugoslavia, Poland and Spain to reach the final, where they faced Portuguese giants Benfica at Wembley Stadium in London on 29 May 1968. With the game finishing 1-1 at the end of normal time, an additional thirty minutes of extra time was played, which saw the English club score three times without reply to end up 4-1 winners. Manchester United did not reach the final again until 1999, when they memorably beat Bayern Munich by scoring twice in stoppage time at the end of the game.

Ajax's first foray into the Cup Winners Cup had come in the 1961-62 season, when they were eliminated in the First Round. The 1986-87 competition was only their third participation in the tournament in its history, but unlike the previous two they came through successive rounds against clubs from Turkey, Greece, Sweden and Spain to reach the final, where they faced East German club Lokomotive Leipzig.

Held at the Olympic Stadium in Athens on 13 May 1987, Ajax won the game by one goal to nil to win their fourth European trophy overall.

The following season, entering the competition as the holders, Ajax again reached the final, where they were defeated by Belgian side Mechelen.

The 1966-67 Cup Winners Cup was Bayern Munich's first in the competition, and only their second participation in European competition. Getting past clubs from Czechoslovakia, Ireland, Austria and Belgium, they faced Scottish Cup holders Rangers in the final.

The game was held at the Städtisches Stadion in Nuremberg on 31 May 1967, and finished goalless at the end of normal time. In extra time, Bayern scored a single goal to win the game 1-0 and win their first European trophy. Entering as holders the following season, they reached the semi-final where they lost to AC Milan of Italy.

The club subsequently reached two more semi-finals during the existence of the competition, but never returned to the final.

Chelsea's entry into the 1970-71 Cup Winners Cup was their fourth campaign in Europe, and their first in this competition, following three participations in the Fairs Cup (they were scheduled to be England's first entrant in the European Cup in 1955, but were prevented from entering by the Football Association).

In the tournament, they defeated clubs from Greece, Bulgaria and Belgium, before knocking out the holders Manchester City in the semi-final, to reach their first European final where they played Real Madrid, who themselves were participating in the tournament for the first time.

The final was held on 19 May 1971 at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, and ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time. As a result, a replay was held in the same stadium two days later, which saw Chelsea win by two goals to one and lift their first European trophy. Twenty-seven years later, in the penultimate holding of the Cup-Winners Cup, Chelsea reached the final again, where they defeated VfB Stuttgart to become the only English club, and one of only five clubs in total, to win the competition more than once.

Juventus's first entry into the Cup Winners Cup came in the 1965-66 season, when they were knocked out in the first round. The 1983-84 competition was their third entry in the competition, in which they got past clubs from Poland, France, Finland and England to reach the final, their fifth in European competition, where they faced FC Porto.

The game was held on 16 May 1984 at the St Jakob Stadium in Basel, with Juventus ending 2-1 winners to gain their second European trophy. Juventus entered the Cup Winners Cup on one further occasion, losing in the semi-final in 1991.

The 1990-91 European season was the first to feature English clubs for five years, following the Heysel Stadium disaster. England were permitted two clubs in European competition, with the previous season's FA Cup winners, Manchester United, entered into the Cup Winners Cup.

The club had been in the competition on three previous occasions, reaching the semi-final in 1984. In the 1990-91 competition, they got past clubs from Hungary, Wales, France and Poland to reach the final, where they faced Spanish giants Barcelona.

The game was played at the Feijenoord Stadium in Rotterdam on 15 May 1991, with United winning by two goals to one, to win England's first European trophy since 1985.

Ajax first entered the UEFA Cup in 1974-75, where they were knocked out in the third round. The club were regular participants in the competition over the next decade, taking part seven times up to the 1991-92 season. In that year, they reached the final for the first time, getting past clubs from Sweden, East Germany, Belgium and Italy on the way.

The final, against Italian side Torino, was played over two legs, with the first played at the Stadio delle'Alpi in Turin on 29 April 1992, and ending 2-2.

The return leg, at the Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam was on 13 May 1992, and finished 0-0, which saw Ajax win the tie on away goals. Their victory made the club the second to complete the set of European trophies, following their victories in the European Cup in 1971 and Cup-Winners Cup in 1987.

Bayern Munich's first participation in the UEFA Cup came in the 1977-78 season, when they reached the third round. The club regularly took part in the competition, reaching the semi-final twice, before the 1995-96 competition. In that season, the club managed to reach the final, getting past clubs from Russia, Scotland, Portugal, England and Spain, before facing French side Bordeaux for the trophy.

The final was played over two legs, with the first at the Olympiastadion in Munich on 1 May 1996 resulting in a 2-0 win for Bayern, while the second leg at the Parc Lescure in Bordeaux ended 3-1 to the Germans, resulting in a 5-1 aggregate victory. Bayern's win saw them become the third team to complete the set of three European trophies, following their wins in the 1967 Cup-Winners Cup and 1974 European Cup.

Chelsea were a latecomer to the UEFA Cup, only participating in the competition for the first time in the 2000-01 season. From 2003-04 onwards, the club were regular participants in the UEFA Champions League (as the European Cup had been renamed), and it was only in the 2012-13 season, when they failed to qualify for the knock-out stage of the Champions League that they dropped down into the UEFA Europa League (the rebranded UEFA Cup). The game was held at the Amsterdam Arena on 15 May 2013, and saw Chelsea win 2-1. Chelsea's victory made them the fourth side to complete the set of three trophies, having won the Cup Winners Cup in 1971, and the European Cup just twelve months earlier in 2012.

Juventus had first taken part in the UEFA Cup in its first season, 1971-72, when they had reached the quarter-final. The 1976-77 season was their third participation, and saw them reach the final, getting past clubs from England (twice), the Soviet Union, East Germany and Greece to face Spanish club Athletic Bilbao.

The final was played over two legs, with the first at Turin's Stadio Comunale on 4 May 1977 seeing Juventus win by a goal to nil. On 18 May 1977, the second leg took place at the San Mamés in Bilbao, with Athletic Bilbao winning 2-1.

This led to a 2-2 result on aggregate, with Juventus winning on away goals. Juventus went on to reach three UEFA Cup finals in the 1990s, winning two. In addition, having already won the European Super Cup, the play-off between the winners of the European Cup and the Cup-Winners Cup, in 1984, Juventus won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1999, to become the first side to win all of UEFA's sanctioned club tournaments.

In 2016-17, the club, having never got past the quarter-final before, reached the final, accounting for clubs from Turkey, the Netherlands, Ukraine, France, Russia, Belgium and Spain.

In the final, at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on 24 May 2017, they faced Dutch side Ajax and ran out 2-1 winners, becoming the fifth club to win all three European trophies, after their victories in the 1968 European Cup and 1991 Cup Winners Cup.
