Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On September 15, 1969, Steve Carlton of the Cardinals struck out 19 Mets. What other amazing occurence happened that night?

Answer: Ron Swoboda hit two two-run home runs and the Mets won 4-3

Ron Swoboda was known more for his strikeouts than his home runs. At the time, Carlton's 19 strikeouts was the Major League record and Swoboda was an unlikely hero.
2. On September 15th, which Met player was a strikeout victim four times, two weeks after being called up from the minor leagues?

Answer: Amos Otis

Amos was in the minors that year mostly because he refused to try and play third base. He insisted he was an outfielder and Gil Hodges decided to keep him in the minors most of that year. After the season he was traded to the Kansas City Royals for Joe Foy in one of the worst trades the Mets ever made. Amos went on to stardom as the centerfielder for the Royals in the 70's.
3. On September 12, 1969 the Mets played a double-header against the Pittsburgh Pirates and won each game 1-0. Which two players had the two runs batted in that day?

Answer: Jerry Koosman and Don Cardwell

This is the only instance I remember where the starting pitchers got the only RBI's in a double-header, though it probably has happened sometime. This is just another example of how it just seemed to be the Mets year.
4. Which 1969 Met placed second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 1968 to Johnny Bench by half a vote?

Answer: Jerry Koosman

With a 19-12 won-loss record and a 2.08 earned run average, Koosman had one of the greatest rookie seasons ever for a Met. He followed that up in 1969 with a 17-6 record and a 2.28 ERA.
5. What place in the standings did the Mets finish in 1968?

Answer: Ninth of ten teams

In 1968, there were only 10 teams in each league. The Mets finished 73-89, and their manager, Gil Hodges, was setting a goal of 85 wins for 1969. The Mets overshot his goal by winning 100 games.
6. What important member of the Mets was acquired in a trade with the Montreal Expos for three minor league players on June 15th, 1969?

Answer: Donn Clendenon

The Expos attempted to trade Donn to the Astros earlier in the year, but he told them he would retire rather than play for Houston. Bowie Kuhn, the Commissioner of Baseball, was involved and ruled that Donn could be traded to the Mets. Donn had another job as a lawyer for Scripto, but the Mets were thrilled to have the power-hitting first baseman in their line-up.
7. In early July, Tom Seaver came close to pitching a perfect game. What team was it against and who got the only hit?

Answer: The Chicago Cubs-Jimmy Qualls

Don Young usually played centerfield for the Cubs, but was in Leo Durocher's doghouse for his play the previous game. The hit came with one out in the ninth inning. It was Qualls' 18th Major League game. No Met player had pitched a no-hitter. Seaver went on to pitch a no-hitter on June 16, 1978 for Cincinnati.
8. What Met pitched seven innings of shutout baseball in relief to get the win in the third and deciding game of the playoff series against the Atlanta Braves?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

The usually wild Ryan came in the game in the third inning for Gary Gentry with two on base and proceded to get the Mets out of that jam. He was left in the game and only gave up three hits while striking out seven. In another horrible trade, the Mets traded Nolan to the California Angels for Jim Fregosi in 1972.
9. Who provided the game-winning hit in the second game of the 1969 World Series against the Baltimore Orioles?

Answer: Al Weis

Al didn't have a great average or hit for much power during the season, but he was great in the World Series. His performance earned him a brand new Volkswagon as the Economy Player of the World Series.
10. In the fourth game of the 1969 World Series, who hit the ball that Ron Swoboda made the amazing catch of in the ninth inning?

Answer: Brooks Robinson

Not known for his fielding prowess Ron made what is arguably one of the great catches of all time, keeping the Mets in the game which they won in the 10th inning on a disputed play.
