Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Born in Wrexham, Wales, this right back may have only got eight England caps, but he turned out 185 times for Liverpool in the 1990s. Can you name him?

Answer: Rob Jones

Jones made his England debut in 1992, in a 2-0 win over France at Wembley after being selected by Graham Taylor. He started his club career with fourth division Crewe Alexandra in 1988, and joined Liverpool in 1991.
2. John Barnes won a total of 79 England caps between 1983 and 1995, but was he playing club football for Watford or Liverpool when he won his first?

Answer: Watford

Barnes was born in Jamaica to Jamaican parents, but national team eligibility criteria drawn by FIFA at the time, allowed British passport holders to represent one of the British football associations even if they had no blood ties to UK. Barnes told the "Jamaican Star", "The only reason I played for England was because they were the first to ask. If Scotland had asked me first I wouldn't have thought I would be good enough to play for England. You go and play for Scotland." Sounds like the FA owe Bobby Robson for having the foresight to ask as Barnes went on to become one of England's most exciting players. Amazingly. although he made his international debut in 1983, it wasn't until after the 1986 World Cup that Barnes became a British passport holder, again telling the "Jamaican Star", "I don't even know if the English F.A. didn't know that I wasn't born there and wasn't brought up there...maybe I played (for England) illegally, right?"
3. Who won England caps against Sweden in 2012 and Scotland in 2013 before deciding to play for Ivory Coast instead?

Answer: Wilfried Zaha

Zaha was born in Ivory Coast and moved to England aged four, growing up in London. He was capped by the England under 19s team in 2011 and went on to make 13 appearances for the under 21s team before getting his call up to the full squad for friendlies against Sweden and Scotland.

As both games were friendlies, and not official FIFA sanctioned games, a player is allowed to switch allegiances, which Zaha did when Ivory coast enquired about him. An interesting fact about Zaha is that he was the last player signed by Alex Ferguson for Manchester United.
4. Tony Dorigo was a long serving defender for Leeds United and Chelsea as well as winning 15 caps for England. Where was Dorigo born?

Answer: Australia

Dorigo was born in Adelaide to an Italian father and Australian mother, but after making a name for himself at Aston Villa and then Chelsea, the FA approached him and asked whether he would be interested in getting his British citizenship and playing for England.

This, he did and as Dorigo told "Four Four Two" magazine, "What I say to my English friends today, is that you lot were so bad you needed an Aussie to come and play for you!" Dorigo left Chelsea in 1991, to sign for Leeds United with whom he made 171 appearances.
5. Which Nigerian born player played alongside Gareth Southgate, future England manager, in the promotion winning Crystal Palace team of 1993-94, and also won five England caps in 1991?

Answer: John Salako

Salako's international career was short lived, winning caps against Australia, New Zealand (twice), Malaysia and Germany in friendlies between June and September of 1991.
6. Don Revie only spent three years as England manager but that was long enough to hand an England call up to this South African born midfielder. Who was the player?

Answer: Colin Viljoen

Viljoen was a stalwart player for Ipswich Town but only won two England caps. Both were under Revie in 1975 and they came just four days apart against Northern Ireland and Wales in the long gone and much missed British Home Championship competition. The other choices were all South African players that have played for Leeds United.
7. Terry Butcher won 77 caps for England and played in the World Cup in 1982, 1986 and 1990. Where was this great defender born?

Answer: Singapore

Butcher's father was in the Royal Navy and it was while he was stationed in Singapore that young Terry was born in 1958. As a player, Butcher won honours in England and Scotland, while playing for Ipswich Town and Rangers respectively and he has managed teams in England, Scotland, Australia and Wales as well as managing the national team of the Philippines for two months in 2018.
8. On 15th October 2018, Sierra Leone born Nathaniel Chalobah made his first appearance for England. Which Premier League side had he signed for in 2017?

Answer: Watford

Nathaniel Chalobah joined Watford from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee, after being with Chelsea since age 10, during which time he was loaned out to several teams and represented England at under 16, under 17, under 19, under 20 and under 21 level. His first full international cap was an almost bitter sweet moment as it came against the mighty Spain and England won, but Chalobah didn't come on until the 90th minute as a substitute for Harry Winks.
9. Which England midfielder was born in Canada, played in Germany and represented Wales at under 19 level?

Answer: Owen Hargreaves

Hargreaves was born in Calgary to a Welsh mother and English father, and after being spotted playing for Calgary Foothills was signed by German giants Bayern Munich. He played three games for the Welsh under 19 side before being approached by England and after just three games for their under 21 squad, he was placed in the full squad, going on to win 42 caps.
10. Graeme Le Saux and Matt Le Tissier were both born in the Channel Islands so had the choice of playing for any of the home nations. Both chose England, but of the two, who made the most appearances?

Answer: Graeme Le Saux

Jersey born defender, Le Saux won 36 caps for England while he was with Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea, scoring one goal in the process, against Brazil. Le Tissier, born in Guernsey and an attacking midfielder for Southampton for his entire professional career only won eight international caps, and failed to score in any of those games, although while playing for England 'B' he did score a hat trick against Russia in April 1998, though this wasn't enough for him to make the squad for the 1998 World Cup.
