Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Charles 'Sonny' Liston lost his heavyweight title to Cassius Clay (as then known) on February 25, 1964. On May 25, 1965, he failed to regain the title from the same man, now known as Muhammad Ali. How many more contests did Liston have after this defeat?

Answer: 16

Liston fought on until 1970 with his last fight being against Chuck Wepner on June 29, 1970. He won on a 10th round stoppage. Rumour had it that Liston was supposed to throw this fight and disobeyed instructions. Whether that was true or not, six months later Liston was dead.
2. Who did Sugar Ray Robinson defeat to win the World Welterweight title in 1946?

Answer: Tommy Bell

Robinson beat Tommy Bell on points to win the welterweight title on December 20, 1946. He had beaten Bell before and had no trouble in cruising to an easy points win.
3. What was the name of the English heavyweight that Rocky Marciano beat to retain his title on May 16, 1955?

Answer: Don Cockell

Cockell received a dreadful beating in this fight. After holding his own for five rounds, the brave but out-matched Cockell was smashed into submission in the 9th round.
4. 'El Flaco Explosive' (The Explosive Thin Man). What was the real name of this triple title holder from Nicaragua whose career began on November 18, 1968, and ended with his last fight on January 21, 1995?

Answer: Alexis Arguello

Alexis Arguello was a terrific boxer with an excellent jaw. He began his career as a featherweight and won world titles at featherweight, super-featherweight and lightweight. He came unstuck, however, when trying for a fourth title, light-welterweight, against Aaron Pryor on November 12, 1982.

After fighting his heart out and receiving a severe beating, he was stopped in round 14. His last fight was on January 21, 1995, against Scott Walker and he lost on points.
5. This 'beanpole' light-heavyweight was probably one of the best ever at the weight and hit like a mule. He won the light-heavyweight title from Dick Tiger on May 24, 1968. Who was he?

Answer: Bob Foster

Foster towered over most of his light-heavyweight opponents. His punching power was phenomenal and he never lost a 175lb title fight.
6. Which mid-20th century British boxer and middle-weight world champion was nicknamed, 'The Leamington Licker'?

Answer: Randolph Turpin

Randy Turpin came from, as did so many boxers, a very deprived background. He won the world middleweight title on July 10, 1951, from Sugar Ray Robinson in a startling upset at London's Earls Court Arena in front of 18,000 fans. He lost the title in a return match against Robinson on September 12 of the same year being stopped in the 10th round. Randolph Turpin committed suicide on May 17, 1966.
7. Nicknamed 'The Clones Cyclone', Barry McGuigan won the WBA world featherweight title on June 8, 1985. Who did he beat to gain this title?

Answer: Eusebio Pedroza

In June of 1985 in front of thousands of fans at Queens Park Rangers football stadium, he beat Pedroza on points over 15 rounds in a thrilling contest. McGuigan lost his title in an upset against unheralded Steve Cruz on points in Las Vegas on June 23, 1986.
8. 'The Hitman' and 'Motor City Cobra' were both one and the same man. Who was this sledgehammer hitter?

Answer: Thomas Hearns

Thomas Hearns was one of the really big hitters of his generation. He won world titles at five weights from welterweight on up. At his best only the very best, Leonard and Hagler, could take him on with any hope of success. Strangely, as an amateur Hearns displayed precious little of the awesome punching power that would make him one of the most feared fighters.

In those early learning days, he displayed excellent boxing skills but barely stopped anyone. According to his trainer, the power was always there, he just didn't know how to use t.
9. Who was the 'rolly-poly cute and cuddly, kind and gentle preacher man', who won the world heavyweight title at the somewhat advanced age of 46 years old?

Answer: George Foreman

In an amazing resurrection, George Foreman defied his age and went back on to the title trail. He flattened Michael Moorer in the 10th round in Las Vegas on November 5, 1994, to win both the WBA and IBF titles. He continued boxing until 1997 when he was almost 49 years old.
10. This English middleweight/super-middleweight was one of most exciting English fighters ever. Nicknamed 'The Dark Destroyer', he won world titles at two weights. His fight with Chris Eubank on November 8, 1990, was a brutal all-time classic. What is his name?

Answer: Nigel Benn

10 years and 48 fights, Nigel Benn was one those value for money fighters who gave it all. A former infantry soldier and the sixth of seven sons, he brought dynamite to the ring. His epic battles with fellow Brit Chris Eubank have gone down in local folklore as epics.

His slaughter of Iran Barkley (August 18, 1990) in less than a round had Barkley's trainer complaining about Benn's roughhouse tactics. Later, in a bout that had a tragic ending, Benn brought to an end the career of the highly regarded American fighter Gerald McClellan in a title fight at the London Arena in February 1995, which ended with McClellan being KO'd in round 10 in a fight that should have been stopped earlier. Nigel Benn retired after being stopped by Steve Collins on November 9, 1996.
