Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What light heavyweight (63-11-1), best known for two losses at the hands of Joe Louis, was known as 'The Pittsburgh Kid'?

Answer: Billy Conn

William D. 'Billy' Conn Jr. was born in East Liberty, PA. His 1941 fight with Louis is considered one of the greatest heavyweight bouts: ahead on points, Conn stopped outboxing the heavy Brown Bomber and went for the knockout. Big {mistake;} he was KOed instead.
2. He is one of Puerto Rico's great fighters. With a record of 44-3-1 (42 KOs), he won 32 consecutive fights by knockout and held titles in three weight classes, most notably jr. featherweight. Who is he?

Answer: Wilfredo Gomez

After retiring in 1985, Gomez made a one-fight comeback four years later. He KOed Mario Salazar, but (perhaps oddly) retired immediately afterwards.
3. The irrepressible Jack Johnson, the first American black heavyweight champion, lost his title in 1915 (and claimed to have taken a dive) at the hands of what gigantic opponent?

Answer: Jess Willard

Having beaten Johnson in Havana, the 'Pottawatomie Giant' lost the title at the hands of Jack Dempsey four years later.
4. Who became the youngest heavyweight champion to date when he knocked out Trevor Berbick in the second round in a 1986 matchup?

Answer: Mike Tyson

Yes, the colorful 'Iron' Mike. Champion at 20 years of age and soon after, the first unified heavyweight champ since Leon Spinks in 1978.
5. No boxing quiz is complete without a question on The Greatest: besides 'The Greatest,' another nickname for Muhammad Ali, back when he was still Cassius Clay, was 'The _____ ______ '?

Answer: Louisville Lip

He was born in Louisville, and his bragging, trash talking and loud proclamations caused reporters to dub him 'The Louisville Lip.' Before a fight with Clay, Archie Moore said he hoped to introduce a new punch he called 'the lip buttoner.'
6. Because you can never get enough of The Greatest: Ali lost five of his 61 bouts. Who was the first man to beat Muhammad Ali in the pro ranks?

Answer: Joe Frazier

On 8th March 1971, in what was and still is billed as 'The Fight Of the Century', 'Smokin' Joe Frazier dropped Ali in the 15th round. They had longer fights then, you know.
7. How did featherweight champion Salvador Sanchez die?

Answer: Automobile crash

Poor Salvador. His record at his death was 44-1-1 (32). He handed Wilfredo Gomez his first defeat, and defended his own title nine times, but his career was cut short.
8. I'd like to get obscure, not to be spiteful but because this guy deserves to be better known. This Welsh flyweight, who never weighed more than 100 pounds, sometimes fought and beat opponents nearly twice his weight. Called 'The Ghost With the Hammer In His Hand' due to his astonishing power, he had an official record of 133-3-2 (99), and hundreds more fights as an amateur. Who was this 'Tylorstown Terror'?

Answer: Jimmy Wilde

A former miner from the age of 12 or 13, Wilde (born 1892, possibly in Tylorstown, Wales) was one of boxing's incredible characters. It is said that contemporary doctors studied his frame, baffled as to how such a small man could possess so much power.

In the take-on-all-comers boxing booths of Wales, he fought and beat hundreds of men. As a pro, he held onto his title for over six years.
9. What was the conclusion to the 1993 Pernell Whitaker-Julio Cesar Chavez welterweight title fight?

Answer: Draw

A hugely controversial result to what was billed as the battle for the best pound-for-pounders. Most ringside observers felt that Whitaker won all but three or four rounds.
10. Who beat Roberto Duran in a rematch fight November 28th, 1980, for the welterweight title?

Answer: Sugar Ray Leonard

Sugar Ray gained back a lot of respect, and 'Hands Of Stone' lost some, when Duran dropped his hands in the 8th and, apparently unhurt, said (now infamously) 'No mas' --- 'no more' in Spanish.
