Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lance Armstrong was born in Plano TX on 18 September 1971. What was his surname at birth?

Answer: Gunderson

His real father, or "DNA donor" as Lance calls him, abandoned his mother when Lance was still a toddler. His mother re-married to a man named Terry Armstrong who formally adopted Lance.
2. Lance turned pro during the course of 1992 and would compete in his first Tour de France in 1993. Before becoming an overall contender in the Tour de France, Lance was actually more focused on winning stages. Where did he win his first Tour stage?

Answer: Verdun (1993)

In his first year as a pro, he already won a stage in the Tour de France. Later in 1993 in Oslo, he became one of the youngest world champions in history at the tender age of 21.
3. For which team did Armstrong ride his first Tour de France (as well as his second, third and fourth for that matter), before being diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1997?

Answer: Motorola

It was a great team with names like Phil Anderson, Steve Bauer, Andy Hampsten, and a young George Hincapie. Cofidis was his new team in 1997 that ditched him when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
4. Having beat cancer into complete remission, Lance Armstrong returned to the Tour de France in 1999. Except for five-time winner Miguel Indurain, nobody considered Lance one of the favorites for the overall win. They were all wrong. Which two riders took second and third on the podium that year?

Answer: Alex Zülle and Fernando Escartin

Only one other rider (Jaan Kirsipuu) got to wear the yellow jersey that year with Armstrong winning four stages. The absence of Marco Pantani (winner 1998) and Jan Ullrich (winner 1997) left some room for sceptisism over his unexpected Tour victory.
5. Each of Lance's seven consecutive overall wins in the Tour de France (now removed from the record books in 2012) were achieved under the managerial and tactical guidance of this team manager. What is the name of this Belgian who won two Tour stages during his active career?

Answer: Johan Bruyneel

Johan "the Hog" Bruyneel is a hugely successful team manager with nine overall victories in the Tour de France (seven with Lance and two with Alberto Contador), two overall wins in the Giro d'Italia (Savoldelli and Contador), and two overall wins in the Vuelta a Espana (Heras and Contador).
6. Which celebrity and then girlfriend of Lance Armstrong was often sighted at the finish line during the Tour de France?

Answer: Sheryl Crow

Although in the somewhat archaic world of cycling riders having female company during stage races is highly frowned upon, Lance often had Sheryl by his side to cheer him on. Her presence only served to intensify the media mayhem which surrounded him. They dated from 2003 until 2006.
7. With his fourth overall win in the Tour de France of 2002, Lance Armstrong broke the record of most wins by an American. Who was the former record holder?

Answer: Greg LeMond

LeMond won the Tour de France in 1986, 1989, and 1990. The second and third win came after his career was feared to be over following a horrific incident. He was accidentally shot in the back by his brother-in-law while turkey hunting in 1987. Andy Hampsten was the first American to win the Giro d'Italia.
8. During his career, Armstrong had been persistently dogged by rumors and allegations of doping. Some of those rumors were rooted in his association with which controversial Italian doctor?

Answer: Michele Ferrari

Ferrari was a maker of champions such as Moreno Argentin, Gianni Bugno, and Tony Rominger. But Levi Leipheimer, Floyd Landis, George Hincapie, and Alexandre Vinokourov were also at some point affiliated with him. Ferrari was convicted of sporting fraud and abuse of his medical license in 2004, only to be absolved of guilt in appeal hearings in 2006.
9. After his comeback in 2009, Lance found himself on the same team with another Tour de France favorite. Even though, everybody involved with Team Astana tried very hard to downplay any friction between the two team leaders, pictures of the final podium in Paris told more than a thousand words. Who was Lance's rival and teammate?

Answer: Alberto Contador

Alberto Contador a.k.a. "El Pistolero" stoically rode to his second overall victory with Lance finishing third. Accusing him of foul play, Lance wrote a clear message on Twitter just days after the Tour had ended: "Hey Pistolero, there's no I in team". To add insult to injury, Lance set up a new team and took on board every single teammate of the Tour 2009, except Contador.

Despite this taunt, in 2010 Contador shattered Lance's hopes of achieving an unprecedented eighth overall Tour victory. In his final Tour de France, Lance finished in 23rd place, 39 minutes 20 seconds behind Contador.
10. Excluding team time trials, how many stages in the Tour de France did Lance win in his career?

Answer: 22

In addition, Lance won four team time trials. Still not as many as the legendary Eddy Merckx.
