1. Looking back at the origins of the Tour of Britain, in which decade was the race first introduced?

Answer: 1940s

During World War II, there was a ban on group cycling events on Britain's roads, but a keen enthusiast called Percy Stallard defied the rules and organised an event. This took place between Llangollen and Wolverhampton. Due to its success, a new organisation called the British League of Racing Cyclists was formed.

Answer: The Great Race

The race has been called several names, normally dependent on the sponsors. The Milk Race ran between 1958 and 1993 and was sponsored by the Milk Marketing Board (MMB). Kellogg's sponsored the race between 1987 and 1994, an overlap with the MMB. The Prudential sponsored PruTour for two years between 1998 and 1999.
3. The Tour of Britain was not raced between 1999 and 2003. Why did the sponsors withdraw their funding?

Answer: Concerns over safety

The race in 1994 saw a car driver ignore the warnings of police officers and purposely drive in to the lead peloton, causing minor injury and damage. Two cyclists withdrew from the race because of this. 1998 saw the death of a police officer who was riding approximately five minutes ahead of the peloton when his motorcycle hit the back of a car.

94 riders took part in the event which started in Manchester and followed a five stage route which also took in Leeds, Nottingham, Newport and London. The overall winner at the end was a Columbian, Mauricio Ardila, who finished the stages in just over five hours.

The second stage of the race was due to take place for 86 miles between Kendal and Blackpool. The tail end of Hurricane Katia, a tropical cyclone which made its way from the Caribbean across the Atlantic Ocean, caused high winds in the northern part of the Britain on 12th September 2011.

The 2013 race started in Peebles in Scotland on 15th September, and went passed beautiful locations including the Lake District, Dartmoor and Caerphilly, with over a million spectators lining the route. The race was won by Jonathan Tiernan Locke.

Answer: Bradley Wiggins

Bradley Wiggins, fondly known as Wiggo, was already a national hero after being the first British cyclist to win the Tour de France. He also won a cycling gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics. His winning time in the 2013 Tour of Britain was just under 30 hours.
