Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Long known for heartbreaking postseason failures, Houston finally broke through with a playoff series win in which year?

Answer: 2004

The Astros defeated Atlanta 3-2 after losing to them in 1997, 1999 and 2001. The series clincher came at Turner Field, lifting Houston to its first NLCS since 1986. Houston eliminated the Braves again in 2005.
2. In 2005, Houston played the first World Series game ever to take place in the state of Texas. Who started that game on the mound for the Astros?

Answer: Roy Oswalt

Oswalt won the NLCS MVP in 2005. He was in control for much of Game 3 of the World Series, before allowed four runs in an inning. Chicago won the game in extra innings.
3. The Astros set a record for the longest recorded game in both the NLDS and NLCS?

Answer: True

The Astros lost to the Mets in 16 innings in Game 6 of the 1986 NLCS and they defeated Atlanta in 18 innings to cap the 2005 NLDS. In addition, though not technically part of the NL postseason, Houston lost a 14-inning game to the White Sox in the 2005 World Series, which also set the mark for longest game by innings in the history of the Fall Classic.
4. This Dominican-born fan favorite earned four All Star bids and won five gold gloves in the outfield during his 11-year Astros career. Who is he?

Answer: Cesar Cedeno

Cedeno played his final five seasons with the Reds, Cardinals, and Dodgers. He retired in 1986.
5. Houston pushed St. Louis to the brink of elimination in the 2004 NLCS with a thrilling Game Five victory. What action ended the game?

Answer: A Jeff Kent home run

Brandon Backe held the mighty Redbirds scoreless for eight innings, and Brad Lidge continued the shutout through the top of the ninth, before Kent launched a three-run home run over the left field wall.
6. The 1998 Astros bested the 1986 squad's team record for most regular season wins by six games. How many wins did Houston accumulate in 1998?

Answer: 102

Houston had the league's second-best record, yet fell to the Padres in the NLDS, 3-1. They won 96 games in 1986.
7. Fan favorite Jeff Bagwell hit how many home runs for the Astros during his 15-year career?

Answer: 449

Bagwell's Astros career was cut short by an arthritic shoulder, which prematurely ended his career. He was the first Astro to ever win an MVP award. He sat out the 2006 season before officially announcing his retirement in December of that year.
8. Houston overcame a poor start to eventually make the World Series in 2005. But how many games under .500 were they before catching fire in late May?

Answer: 15

The Astros became only the second team in major league history to ever make the postseason after falling 15 games below .500 on May 24. They clinched the Wild Card on the season's final day.
9. How many times did skipper Larry Dierker guide the Astros to the postseason?

Answer: 4

1997, 1998, 1999, and 2001. Unfortunately, the Astros won only two total games in those four NLDS appearances.
10. What unlikely culprit's 9th inning home run tied the game that Houston eventually won in 18 innings versus Atlanta, in Game 4 of the 2005 NLDS?

Answer: Brad Ausmus

Ausmus cleared the yellow line in left-center field by an inch or so, sending the game to extra frames. Of course Chris Burke hit the home run to win in the bottom of the 18th.
11. What Astro scored baseball's 1,000,000th run in 1975?

Answer: Bob Watson

Watson later served as the team's General Manager from 1994-95 before leaving to take the same role with the Yankees. He was baseball's first African-American GM.
12. In 2005, what city became home to the Astros' AA minor league franchise?

Answer: Corpus Christi

The Hooks played at Whataburger Stadium. Prior to 2005, the Astros AA team played in such cities as Round Rock, Texas, and Jackson, Mississippi.
13. From whom did Drayton McLane buy the team in 1993?

Answer: John McMullen

McLane was a successful businessman, running a grocery distribution company prior to purchasing the Astros. McMullen also owned the NHLs New Jersey Devils.
14. Houston's dramatic 1980 NLCS saw its final four games go into extra innings. Which NL East squad denied Houston a trip to the World Series?

Answer: Philadelphia

Houston lost three close NL Championship Series before finally earning a World Series bid in 2005. The Mets beat them 4-2 in 1986, and the Cardinals defeated them 4-3 in 2004. The Astros won by a 4-2 margin against St. Louis in 2005.
15. What Astros hurler won 20 games in consecutive years in 2004 and 2005?

Answer: Roy Oswalt

In his first six seasons as an Astro (2001-2006), Roy had five Top 5 Cy Young award finishes, and had won 20 games on two occasions. Houston wisely signed him to a five-year contract extension.
