Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1998, Michigan became the first team to average 110,000 in a season when 665,787 fans attended six home games. What was the last year Michigan averaged five figures (less than 100,000) in attendance per home game?

Answer: 1975

Believe it or not, on fall Saturdays in which The University of Michigan plays home football games, Michigan Stadium ranks in the top 100 U.S. cities by population.
2. In what year was the famous wing design added to the Michigan football helmets?

Answer: 1938

Rookie coach Fritz Crisler introduced the changes in 1938 as a way to improve morale after Michigan had a few "down seasons" following their 1932 and 1933 National Championships. Crisler and the new helmets worked out pretty well. The winged helmets are an icon and Michigan plays basketball in an arena named after that rookie coach. Nice job Fritz!
3. Michigan's first Rose Bowl victory came in 1902 in a 49-0 landslide under coach Fielding Yost. What team did Michigan slaughter that day?

Answer: Stanford Cardinals

Michigan would not play in another Rose Bowl until 1948 when they matched it by beating USC 49-0 under Fritz Crisler.
4. Bo Schembechler coached his last game for Michigan in a 17-10 Rose Bowl loss to what team?

Answer: Southern California

Bo Schembechler finished his fantastic career at Michigan with a Rose Bowl loss. But it was rather fitting because his final Rose Bowl record was a lack-luster 2-8. His ten Rose Bowls were 1970, 1972, 1977-78-79, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989-90.
5. Prior to the 1970 Rose Bowl game Bo Schembechler suffered a heart attack which kept him in the hospital for the game. Who was the Defensive Coordinator who handled the Head Coaching duties in his place?

Answer: Jim Young

Unfortunatly, Michigan came out on the short end of the stick that day, losing to USC 10-3. Bo would recover to lead U of M back to the Rose Bowl 9 more times.
6. Name the Arthur Robinson Scholarship Award winning Nose Tackle for the 1997 National Champion Michigan Wolverines?

Answer: Rob Renes

Renes was a major contributor on a defense that boasted a Hiesmann Trophy winner Charles Woodson. Michigan beat Washington State 21-16, securing Michigans first National Championship since 1948.
7. How many times did Michigan beat their arch-rival Ohio State during the 1990s?

Answer: Seven

Michigan finished the decade with a 7-2-1 record vs. the Buckeyes, spoiling two possible National Titles for Ohio State, and delighting Michigan fans world wide.
8. Who was Michigan's first All-American?

Answer: Willie Cunningham

Cunningham was an All-American Center on the 1898 team. It was Cunningham who inspired Louis Elbel to write "Hail to the victors", now considered to be one of the greatest fight songs in College Football history.
9. Which Wolverine set a NCAA single season punt return record with 455 yards in the 1990 season?

Answer: Tripp Welborne

Welborne, who was moved to Safety from Wide Reciever in 1989, also recorded nine interceptions and 238 tackles at Michigan before being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings.
10. Who caught Kordell Stewarts hail mary in the infamous Michigan vs. Colorado game of 1994?

Answer: Michael Westbrook

In a devastating loss, witnessed by yours truly, Michigan lost to Colorado 27-26. Kordell Stewart and Michael Westbrook have gone on to up and down careers. Stewart with the Steelers and Westbrook with the Redskins and Bengals.
