24 countries played in the 1982 World Cup Finals. This was an increase of eight teams from the previous seven tournaments which saw 16 finalists in four groups of four. Prior to this there were various numbers of finalists.

Italy won the final 3-1 against West Germany. This was their third victory following wins in 1934 and 1938. Interestingly, they did not win in their first three games, drawing them all.

Paolo Rossi was top scorer with six goals, these all coming in Italy's last three matches of the tournament. He scored three against Brazil in a 3-2 victory in the second Phase Group Match, two against Poland in the semi-final 2-0 victory, and the first in the final in the 3-1 victory over West Germany.

England started their campaign in style when Bryan Robson headed a Paul Mariner cross into the French net. The game finshed 3-1 in Englands favour with Soler equalising for France, and Bryan Robson scoring a second for England and Paul Mariner the third.

Paul Breitner scored for Italy in the 82nd minute although it was too little too late for West Germany. He scored a penalty in the 1974 World Cup Final in West Germany's 2-1 victory over Holland. Tardelli scored in the '82 final. Hansi Muller came on as substitute in the '82 final, not to be confused with Gerd Muller who wcored in the '74 final. Horst 'Monster' Hrubesch was famous for scoring twice in the 1980 European Championship final.

This goal made Breitner only the third player after Vava and Pele to score in two finals.

Answer: Alessandro Altobelli

Altobelli came on for the injured Graziani after only seven minutes. He scored in the 80th minute and with the game secure, the Italian Manager Enzo Bearzot, gave his old faithful player Causio a World Cup Final appearance taking off the young Altobelli. Altobelli scored five goals in the following World Cup in Mexico.

Hungary won 10-1 with goals from Nyilasi (two), Fazekas(two), Paloskei, Toth, Kiss (three),and Szentes. Zapata replied for El Salvador. It was 3-0 at half time. Both teams went out in the group stages. Hungary lost to Argentina 4-1 and drew with Belgium 1-1. New Zealand, Honduras, and Kuwait, all playing in their first World Cup finals were knocked out in the first group stage.

After a thrilling 3-3 draw in the semi-finals between France and West Germany, the West German's won 5-4 on penalties. Littbarski, Rummenigge, and Fischer, scored for West Germany with Platini, Tresor, and Giresse, scoring for France.

Answer: England, Scotland and Northern Ireland

England, Scotland, and northern Ireland, qualified for the finals. Scotland and Northern Ireland came through the same qualifying group (ahead of Portugal, Sweden, and Israel). Wales almost made it but slipped up at home to Iceland.

Diego Maradona, who won the World Cup in Mexico (1986) and was runner up in 1990, was sent off in the second round game between Argentina and Brazil. In his first World Cup, the youngster was closely marked in all his matches and eventually against Brazil, he lost his temper and was given his marching orders after a cynical foul.
