24 countries played in the 1982 World Cup Finals. This was an increase of eight teams from the previous seven tournaments which saw 16 finalists in four groups of four. Prior to this there were various numbers of finalists.

Answer: Italy

Italy won the final 3-1 against West Germany. This was their third victory following wins in 1934 and 1938. Interestingly, they did not win in their first three games, drawing them all.

Paolo Rossi was top scorer with six goals, these all coming in Italy's last three matches of the tournament. He scored three against Brazil in a 3-2 victory in the second Phase Group Match, two against Poland in the semi-final 2-0 victory, and the first in the final in the 3-1 victory over West Germany.

England started their campaign in style when Bryan Robson headed a Paul Mariner cross into the French net. The game finshed 3-1 in Englands favour with Soler equalising for France, and Bryan Robson scoring a second for England and Paul Mariner the third.

Paul Breitner scored for Italy in the 82nd minute although it was too little too late for West Germany. He scored a penalty in the 1974 World Cup Final in West Germany's 2-1 victory over Holland. Tardelli scored in the '82 final. Hansi Muller came on as substitute in the '82 final, not to be confused with Gerd Muller who wcored in the '74 final. Horst 'Monster' Hrubesch was famous for scoring twice in the 1980 European Championship final.

This goal made Breitner only the third player after Vava and Pele to score in two finals.

Altobelli scored five goals in the following World Cup in Mexico.

New Zealand, Honduras, and Kuwait, all playing in their first World Cup finals were knocked out in the first group stage.
