He was generally known as Gilbert in the family, but to the world at large he became 'W.G.'
2. In which year did W.G. make his first appearance for the Gentlemen against the Players?

Answer: 1865

Grace was not quite 17 years old. He had been selected as a bowler and took 4 for 65, and 3 for 60. Batting at No 8, he scored 23 and 12 not out.
3. W.G.'s first overseas tour was in 1872, in a team captained by R.A. Fitzgerald. Where did he go?

Answer: North America

Fitzgerald's team toured Canada and the United States in August and September of 1872, playing at Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, Hamilton, Hoboken, Philadelphia and Boston. They won 7 of their 8 games and drew one. W.G. made 540 runs with an average of 49.09. The next highest aggregate was 146 and the next best batting average was 16.4.

He scored 2,346 runs in 48 innings (twice not out). From May 9th to May 30th he made 1,016 in ten innings, including two double centuries and two centuries, and also including his hundredth 100. The first quadruple century was scored in the same year by Archie MacLaren of Lancashire, who just beat W.G. to the top of the batting averages.

Answer: London County

London County C.C. was formed by the directors of the Crystal Palace Company and played its home games at the Palace. Its games against first-class teams were given first-class status from 1900 but it was not admitted to the county championship. However, despite W.G.'s prestige, the club could not pay its way.

It lost its first-class status after 1904, and was dissolved at the end of the 1908 season. W.G. played 63 first-class games for the side, scoring 3,485 runs and taking 135 wickets.

Answer: 1915

Grace died of a heart attack on October 23rd, 1915. The 1916 edition of Wisden, containing his obituary and that of Victor Trumper, is a prized collectors' item.
