Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dan Marino had a storied career with the Dolphins. Amongst all his accomplishments was being the first quarterback to pass for over 5000 yards in a season, and setting a record for throwing 48 touchdowns in a season. His jersey number was not unlucky for him. What number was it?

Answer: 13

Dan came out of Pittsburgh in college, and was a nine-time Pro Bowler before retiring after 17 seasons in 1999. Marino was a Hall of Fame inductee in 2005.
2. This Cleveland Browns tremendous running back, Jim Brown, played for only nine seasons in his career. In all nine seasons, he was nominated to the Pro Bowl each time. Which number donned the back of this great Hall of Famer?

Answer: 32

Brown was an All-American out of Syracuse, and the Browns took him as their number one pick in the 1957 draft. After winning the Rookie of the Year in 1957, he went on to lead the NFL in rushing for eight of his nine years. He walked away from the game in 1965, and was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1971.
3. Quarterback Joe Montana broke many NFL records records. For 13 seasons he played with the the number 16 on his back in a San Francisco 49er uniform. He spent his last two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and wore which number?

Answer: 19

Joe was drafted from Notre Dame in 1979, amazingly not until the third round. Montana led San Francisco to four Super Bowls and was also named Super Bowl MVP three times. He missed the entire 1991 season due to injury and played until 1992 in San Francisco, then retired as a Chief in 1994. Montana was an easy hall inductee in 2000.
4. O.J. Simpson broke the season rushing record of the great Jim Brown while playing for the Bills. After nine seasons in Buffalo wearing the number 32, Simpson found himself in a 49er jersey for his final two seasons wearing which number on his back?

Answer: 32

O.J. played for the Bills from 1969-1977. He retired as a 49er in 1979, but not before being the NFL Player of the Year three times, and leading the league in rushing four times. The hall took O.J. in 1985.
5. For 17 of his 18 seasons, Johnny Unitas, the Baltimore Colts quarterback was a fixture in the NFL setting many passing records. From receivers in the names of Raymond Berry to Lenny Moore, it was a shock to the city of Baltimore that he moved to San Diego in his final season of 1973. Which number did Johnny wear througout his NFL career?

Answer: 19

From 1956 to 1972, the familiar number 19 and his trademark high-top shoes followed Unitas throughout his career. This was after he began his career with his first-ever pass being intercepted for a touchdown. He played in only five games in 1973 with the Chargers before retiring.

A very deserving Hall of Fame inductee, they took him in 1979. Unitas had the same nickname of a NBA Hall of Fame great also, 'Mr. Clutch', Jerry West. West wore the number 44.
6. In eight of his 13 seasons, defensive lineman Howie Long made the Pro Bowl in his NFL career with the Raiders. Long was a second round draft pick in 1981. After retiring, he appeared in some movies such as, "Broken Arrow", with John Travolta. What number was on his back with the Raiders?

Answer: 75

7. The Dallas Cowboys have had some great quarterbacks of their own. Going backwards in time to name a few, there was Troy Aikman who donned the number 8, Roger Staubach who wore the number 12, and Don Merideth who wore which number?

Answer: 17

Merideth played for the Cowboys during his entire career from 1960-1968. It is tough to comprehend that with his running backs of Don Perkins and Dan Reeves, along with his receivers of Bob Hayes and Lance Rentzel, that he never led the Cowboys to a Super Bowl victory.
8. Like the great Jim Brown, I had a relatively short career with the Cleveland Browns as a running back. I played for the Browns from 1964-1973. I had the privilege of playing with Mr. Brown for two seasons before he retired. I developed a high-kicking maneuver to avoid the defense. I led the league in rushing twice myself, led the league three times in rushing touchdowns, and was a Pro Bowler six times in my 10 seasons. My name is Leroy Kelly, and if you noticed me, I wore which number?

Answer: 44

What a transition for the Browns from the great Jim Brown to Leroy Kelly. It is hard to imagine that Leroy was an eighth round draft choice, but Jim Brown had something to do with the 'molding' of Kelly. The Morgan State draftee was a NFL Hall of Fame inductee in 1994.
9. For 15 of his 16 seasons, this nine-time Pro Bowler was a factor in the Green Bay Packer offensive line from 1956-1970. His name was Forrest Gregg, and his number was what?

Answer: 75

Protecting the great Bart Starr to Zeke Bratkowsi with Green Bay, to Craig Morton and Roger Staubach in his final season with the Cowboys, this number two Green Bay draft pick was selected into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1977.
10. For 12 seasons, this Hall of Fame running back played most of his seasons with the Miami Dolphins. Larry Csonka was also there for the Dolphins' perfect 1972 season of going 14-0, and winning the Super Bowl over the Washington Redskins. In addition to this, he blocked for his running back teammate of Mercury Morris, and they were both the first running backs to rush for 1000 yards in the same season on the same team. Csonka wore which number?

Answer: 39

Larry was Miami's number one draft pick in the 1967 draft. He rushed for over 1000 yards in a season three times, and was the Super Bowl VIII MVP. In 1972, Csonka rushed for 1117 yards, while Morris rushed for exactly 1000 yards. Their quarterbacks in the season were Bob Griese and Earl Morrall.
