Two years before, at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, Uruguay beat Argentina 2-1 (in a replay as the teams had played out a 1-1 draw). The same teams contested the first World Cup Final, and the same team won. Yugoslavia and USA were the losing semi-finalists (there was no 3rd place match)
The 13 teams were: They were Belgium, France, Romania, Yugoslavia, Uruguay, the host, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Peru, the U.S. and Mexico. The competition expanded from 16 to 24 teams for Spain 1982, and to 32 teams for 1998 France.
2. England 1966. This World Cup tournament was the last to be broadcasted in black and white. The score in the final was 4-2 aet. The third goal scored by England caused friction during the game. The referee was not sure it was a goal so he consulted with the linesman. This one said it was a goal, so the referee accepted the fact. The English team defeated West Germany. The captain of the English team was Bobby Moore, who later was part of the cast in the movie "Victory" (1981), a movie about a soccer team during World War II.
The 3rd and 4th places went to Portugal and the Soviet Union (Portugal won the 3rd place match 2-1).

Brazil's team had Carlos Alberto, as the captain, and other players were Pele, Jairzinho, Greyson, Tostado, Gerson and Rivelino. The composition of the team has been called "the team of the century" and the goal scored by Carlos Alberto, assisted by Pele, was the best goal of the tournament and it has also been called the "goal of the century".
Since Brazil was champion for the third time, the team was allowed to keep the World Cup permanently. Unfortunately, it was stolen later by thieves who melted it and sold it as it was made of gold.

The Azteca Stadium in Mexico City was the location where the final took place, with an attendance of 114,600 spectators. The second place went to West Germany. France and Belgium won third and fourth place respectively (France won the 3rd place play-off 4-2 aet). Diego Maradona was the team's captain.

He was "half angel, half devil" said French journal, "L'Equipe". He was compared to Brazilian player Pele.

The third and fourth places belonged to Italy and England respectively (Italy beat England 2-1 in the 3rd place pay-off). In this tournament, the surprise team was Cameroon, who made it through to the quarter finals, where they lost 2-3 to England.

They were the first African country to reach the last eight at a World Cup.
