Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Texas Ranger had a batted fly ball hit him on top of the head, then bounce over the fence for a home run?

Answer: Jose Canseco

On May 26, 1993, the Indians' Carlos Martinez hit what looked like a routine fly ball to right field but deep. As Canseco stood to catch it at the wall, the ball bounced off his head and into the stands, which would become a historical and memorable highlight reel in baseball. The Indians won the game 7-6, while one of the greatest bloopers rooted in baseball history.
2. In 1999, the Hank Aaron Award was first presented, marking the 25th anniversary of Aaron breaking Babe Ruth's career home run record. Which outfielder was the first-ever to receive this award for the American League in 1999?

Answer: Manny Ramirez

The others were all pitchers. Manny was with the Cleveland Indians in 1999. It would be his first of two Hank Aaron awards that he would win. Ramirez also tied for third place in the AL MVP voting in 1999, behind Ivan Rodriguez, Pedro Martinez, and tied with Roberto Alomar for third.
3. Which outfielder set a season record for most the hits in a season with 262?

Answer: Ichiro Suzuki

Ichiro of the Mariners broke the long-standing record of St. Louis Brown George Sisler. Sisler was a first baseman and hit safely 257 times in 1920. Ichiro broke George's season record in 2004. In Suzuki's first 10 seasons in the Majors, he had over 200 hits in each season.
4. The 1954 Indians won an amazing 111 games in the 154-game season and were favored when they met the Giants in the World Series. In game one of the series in the eighth inning, Indian Vic Wertz hit a ball deep to centerfield with two Indians on base. The Giants' centerfielder made a historical and spectacular over-the-shoulder catch to stop the Indians cold. Who caught this ball that took all the air from the Indians, while making a historic replay for baseball?

Answer: Willie Mays

With the scored tied in the eighth at two runs each, Wertz's shot looked like a three-run home run, or at least would score two if Mays didn't make his over-the-shoulder catch. Giants manager Leo Durocher had just replaced Sal Maglie as pitcher, and inserted Don Liddle who dished up the pitch.

The Giants won the game in the 10th inning 5-2, and the series four games to none. The others listed were all Brooklyn Dodgers who finished in second place in 1954.
5. Of these four great slugging outfielders, who was the oldest when they made it to the 500 Home Run Club?

Answer: Ted Williams

Williams was 41 when he hit his 500th home run on June 17, 1960. It came via compliments of pitcher Wynn Hawkins of the Indians. Ted played all his 19 seasons with the Red Sox and retired with 521, which was later tied with the great Giant star, Willie McCovey. The others listed were all 34 years old when they hit their 500th career home run.
6. The 1955 World Series that pitted the Yankees against the Dodgers, saw a World Series saving catch by a Dodger in game seven. Which outfielder made this historical grab?

Answer: Sandy Amoros

Game seven saw Johnny Podres and the Dodgers with a 2-0 lead. Yankee Yogi Berra hit the ball deep to left, and because the Dodgers were playing the left-handed Berra to pull the ball, they weren't ready for a left field line fly ball. Amoros not only made the out-stretched catch, but also doubled up Gil McDougal. Sandy's catch not only saved the game, but helped give the Dodgers their first-ever World Series title.

The others listed never played for either team.
7. Cap Anson was the first player in baseball history to get 3000 career hits when he hit this mark in 1897. However, Anson was primarily a third baseman. Honus Wagner was next, then Nap Lajoie, but none of those were outfielders. Then came along which career outfielder who became the fourth player in history to reach this major milestone of 3000 career hits?

Answer: Ty Cobb

Cobb earned his Hall of Fame induction by playing from 1905-1928. After 22 loyal seasons with the Tigers, he was traded to the Philadelphia Athletics for his final two seasons. Cobb went on to reach the 4000-hit plateau and retired with 4189. His career hit record stood until Pete Rose broke it in 1985, 57 seasons later.
8. The 40/40 Club is for those baseball players who have hit 40 home runs and stole 40 bases in a season. Which outfielder was the very first member of this club?

Answer: Jose Canseco

The others all accomplished this feat, but it was Canseco who did it with the Athletics in 1988. Jose hit 42 home runs and stole 40 bases. For his efforts, Canseco was voted the American League MVP in 1988. Of the other three listed and not necessarily outfielders, Bonds did it in 1996, A-Rod in 1998, and Soriano in 2006.
9. Which American League outfielder set a record for having six unassisted double-plays in his career?

Answer: Tris Speaker

The others listed were all pitchers. Mostly with the Red Sox and Indians, Speaker not only retired with six, but pulled off two in 1914 with the Red Sox. He also performed two in 1918 with the Indians while being only nine days apart. The last outfielder in the 20th Century to pull off two unassisted double-plays in a season was Jose Cardenal, a Cleveland Indian in 1968.
10. Which Hall of Fame outfielder had the nickname, "Man of Steal"?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

Henderson was certainly made of steal, stealing bases for a living. He set a Major League record in 1982 by bagging 130 with the Athletics. Rickey stole over 100 bases in a season three times, and led the league 13 times in his career. He was the first to steal 1000 bases, and retired with 1406.
