Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Though coming from Kansas, one Phoenix Rising member has the nickname 'Tacobowler'. He follows Mexican sport with alacrity and was very excited when which race-walker won the silver in Rio de Janeiro, in 2016?

Answer: Lupita González

The silver medals in Rio contained 30% recycled materials. Lupita (real name María Guadalupe González Romero) was the silver medallist but subsequently won the IAAF Race Walking Challenge. She was born in Tlalnepantla, Mexico, and though a favourite to win in Rio, suffered in the humid conditions and was unable to achieve gold.

2. Which Australian swimmer, well known for winning a gold medal for the same event at three consecutive Olympic Games, started her Olympic career with a silver medal in 400 metres freestyle event at the 1956 Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne.

Answer: Dawn Fraser

Dawn Fraser was a controversial character who was as well known for her touch of larrikinism as she was for her prowess in the pool. One of the highlights of her career was winning the gold medal for the women's 100 metre freestyle event at the Olympics in 1956, 1960 and 1964. Despite this glittering array she proved she was fallible by being relegated to second spot in her first event, the 400 metres freestyle. Dawn's Olympic career ended after the Tokyo games in 1964 with a trophy cabinet that boasted four Olympic golds (the fourth was in the 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay) and four silver medals, the other three were all relay medals.

Pheonix Rising member, Pollucci19, VegemteKid, 1nn1 and ozzz2002 had great pleasure supporting Dawn into second place.
3. Despite being ranked number one in the world for 199 consecutive weeks, and the vociferous support of purelyqing, Lee Chong Wei was not able to secure an Olympic gold medal for Malaysia in which sport?

Answer: Badminton

Lee maintained his staggering run at the top of the rankings from 21 August 2008 to 14 June 2012. He became the first Malaysian to hold the number ranking for more than one year, became the country's first male to reach the final in an Olympic singles event for the discipline and became the sixth Malaysian to win an Olympic medal for his home country.

He made the men's singles final for the first time in 2008 at Beijing and then followed up this effort with further appearance in 2012 and 2016. On each occasion he stumbled at the final hurdle, securing a silver medal.

Despite this he is considered a hero in his country.
4. At which Olympic Games did an individual Olympic gold medal elude Mark Spitz, relegating the champion swimmer to a silver and a bronze in his specialty events?

Answer: Mexico City (1968)

Spitz famously collected seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, four of these in individual events and the other three in relays. These, however, were not his first games. He debuted as an Olympian in 1968 and, at the time, had held ten world records. He made the bold claim that he would no less than six gold medals at Mexico but, in the end, he would only return home with two. Both of these were in relay (not individual) events. His sole successes as an individual were in the 100 metres butterfly (silver) and 100 metres freestyle (bronze).

And - the Phoenix Rising teammate enjoying Spitz's feats are too numerous to mention!
5. Ah, Jamaica. Unable to win in the winter luge races, Phoenix Rising member JAM6430 was excited to see Ray Stewart realise a silver medal for Jamaica in as part of the 4 x 100 m relay, held in what US city in 1984?

Answer: Los Angeles

Raymond Douglas Stewart was born in Jamiace in 1965 and joined with Al Lawrence Greg Meghoo. and Don Quarrie to beat Canada in to second place, less that a second after the USA team led by Sam Graddy. The world record for the race at that time was held by the USA in 1983, who won in Helsinki in 37.86 seconds.

The Jamaican team were one of three medalists at the Los Angeles Olympics, and the only ones who achieved silver.
6. Tiger51 decided she would cheer for India in the 1960 Rome Olympic Games. Jaswant Singh was part of the team who won silver with his team in what event, better known in the USA and Canada as a winter sport?

Answer: Hockey

Field hockey as it is known in the Summer Olympics is played in most Commonwealth nations, and though played in winter, it is not played on ice. The game is also hotly contested in the Commonwealth games. India were beaten into the gold position by Pakistan, with a score of 1-0.
7. A perennial at Olympic Games, Chinese athlete Cong Xuedi won bronze at the Los Angles games, and followed it up with silver in the Barcelona Olympics in what sport?

Answer: Women's basketball

Born in Shanghai, Cong represented China in the 1984 Olympic Games, where the team won bronze. She played as served as point guard, and was 166 cm in height. Although Cong retired in 1989, she came back to represent her country in in the 1992 games, helping them to achieve silver in the Barcelona Games in 1992. ChinaCatmama was thrilled to see her do so well!
8. Smpdit is a great fan of Lucinda Green, Great Britain's flag bearer during the opening ceremony at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Lucinda would win a silver medal at these games with the assistance of which of the following?

Answer: A horse

Lucinda Green MBE served her country with distinction in eventing, an equestrian event conducted over the three disciplines of dressage, cross country and show jumping. Apart from being a European champion on two occasions, a World champion in 1982 and the Badminton Horse Trials champion on six occasions she also help to lift her British team to a silver medal at the LA Olympics.

In an exciting finish to the event, Linda, riding Regal Realm, and her teammates Virginia Leng, Ian Stark and Diana Clapham, were just pipped at the post by the powerful United States team.

This would represent Lucinda's sole success at the Olympic Games.
9. Which of the following won a silver medal for Russia in the three metre springboard (diving) event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games?

Answer: Irina Lashko

Of the above, Lashko is the only diver. Lashko has the rare distinction of having competed in four Summer Olympic Games and competing for four different countries. She represented the Soviet Union in 1988 (no medals), the Unified Team in 1992 (winning a silver in the three metre springboard), Russia in 1996 (silver as described above) and, after marrying an Australian, Australia in 2000 at Sydney, where she won a bronze medal in the synchronised diving event.
10. Our fearless leader JCSon knows, but can you tell us which of the following partnered Piet Norval to a silver medal in the men's doubles tennis event at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona?

Answer: Wayne Ferreira

As a junior, Wayne Ferreira was ranked number one in the world as a doubles player and number six as a singles player. He would continue with that success when he turned professional in 1989 reaching, at least, the fourth round in all four of the Grand Slam events. He would partner Amanda Coetzer in 2000 to win the Hopman Cup for South Africa. However, in 1992 he Piet Norval stunned a number of more fancied rivals to reach final of the men's doubles at Barcelona. They would go down to the highly fancied pair of Boris Becker and Michael Stich from Germany.

Javier Frana and Christian Miniussi both represented Argentina at these games.
