Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following was the oldest slugger to win a home run title?

Answer: Darrell Evans

In 1985, Evans with the Detroit Tigers hit 40 home runs at the age of 38 to lead the American League. Ironically, this was Darrell's only home run crown. During Evans' 21 season career, he also played for the Giants and Braves, retiring in 1989.
2. Which catcher won a Rookie of the Year Award, two MVP Awards, two home run crowns, three RBI titles, and retired with the most home runs by a catcher?

Answer: Johnny Bench

Bench played for the Cincinnati Reds his entire career of 17 seasons. He won the Rookie of the Year in 1968, and his MVPs came in 1970 and 1972. His 389 career home runs led all catchers when he retired in 1983. He was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1989.
3. Which of the following never had 200 hits in a season throughout their entire career?

Answer: Ted Williams

In 1949, Williams of the Red Sox hit his career high 194 hits in a season. He won the American League MVP for his efforts. Garvey had over 200 hits for the Dodgers six times. Brett, the 21 season Kansas City Royal reached the 200 plateau twice, and Bill Buckner also did it twice, once with the Cubs and once with the Red Sox.
4. Manager Bobby Cox began his managerial career with the Braves in 1978, then left the Braves in 1982 for which team before coming back to Atlanta in 1990?

Answer: Toronto Blue Jays

In his inaugural seasons of managing, Cox could not muster a better than fourth place finish with the Braves. After the 1981 season, he left for Canada and won the AL East in 1985. He then left managing until Atlanta contracted him back for the 1990 season. In 1991 and 1992, Cox and the Braves won the National League pennant, but lost in the World Series both times.
5. Which former home run champion lost almost four full seasons of baseball due to WWII, then came back to help his team win the World Series in 1945?

Answer: Hank Greenberg

The original 'Hammerin Hank' only played in 19 games in the 1941 season before reporting for military service. He came back to play in 78 games in 1945, and helped lead his Tigers to the American League crown, then the World Series against the Cubs. Greenberg won four home run titles in his career.

When Williams came back after a three-season military duty, his Red Sox lost to the Cardinals in the 1946 World Series.
6. I was the last player/manager in the 20th century to lead my team to a World Series crown. Who am I?

Answer: Lou Boudreau

In 1948, Boudreau pulled double duty for the Indians. At 30 years old and playing shortstop, Boudreau not only led the Indians to the World Series title against the Boston Braves, but he also won the American League season MVP, topping Joe DiMaggio of the Yankees and Ted Williams of the Red Sox.

As a manager of 16 seasons, Boudreau never finished better than third place in his career except for the 1948 World Series Crown.
7. Which of the following left-handed batters had the highest season batting average?

Answer: George Sisler

All were left-handed greats. In Sisler's 15 seasons in the Majors, he appeared in seven of those as a pitcher, but was primarily a first baseman. In 1922, George hit over .400 for the second time in his career, hitting .420 and earning him the American League MVP. Jackson hit .408 with the Indians in 1911, Williams' highest batting average in a full season was .406, and Terry of the NY Giants hit .401 in 1930.
8. Catcher Darrell Porter began his career as a Milwaukee Brewer, then retired as a Texas Ranger in 1987 after 17 seasons. How many World Series did he go to?

Answer: 3

Porter played for the Brewers for six seasons, then became a Royal in 1977. In his final season in Kansas City, he saw his first World Series, then moved to St. Louis for the 1981 season, where he saw his second World Series in 1982. His third and final appearance was as a Cardinal in 1985 against the Royals.
9. This person had the nickname, 'Staten Island Scot', and was most famous for one single home run in his career. Who is it?

Answer: Bobby Thomson

Thomson was the one who hit the home run that was the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" in 1951. His blast finished off the Brooklyn Dodgers, allowing the NY Giants to go to the World Series against the New York Yankees. The Giants lost the series four games to two. Thomson retired after 15 seasons with 264 home runs, but none greater than that blast in 1951, if you were a Giant fan.
10. Which of the following never won back-to-back batting titles in their career?

Answer: Jackie Robinson

After winning the Rookie of the Year Award in 1947 with the Dodgers, Jackie won his only batting title in 1949, also winning the National League MVP. Musial not only went back-to-back, but he won three with the Cardinals from 1950-1952. Clemente of the Pirates hit his way to consecutive batting titles in 1964 and 1965, and Rose's consecutive titles came in 1968 and 1969, as part of the 'Big Red Machine', Cincinnati Reds.
